Rangers Dismiss Gordon, Win Tip-Off Tournament Title

WENHAM, Mass. – (November 16, 2013) – The Drew University women's basketball team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 62-39 victory over Gordon College (1-1) and captured the Gordon Tip-Off Tournament title this afternoon.

Freshman Hannah Miller (Rumson, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven) poured in a game-high 21 points and earned All-Tournament team honors. The first-year guard knocked down three, 3-pointers and pulled down a team-high six rebounds in the win. Junior Breana Wilson (Irvington, N.J./Berkshire) added seven points and also was one of four members of the Gordon Tip-Off Classic All-Tournament Team.

The Rangers led wire-to-wire in the contest, holding the Fighting Scots to just 18 halftime points. Drew scored the first nine points of the game and didn't look back. Miller and sophomore Courtney Stephens  (Pikesville, Md./Gerstell Academy) combined for 20 of the Rangers 31 first half points. Stephens totaled 13 points and came up with a game-high four steals on the afternoon.

Sophomore Erin Howard (Tolland, Conn./East Catholic) put forth another solid effort for the Rangers, compiling 13 points and five rebounds. Howard came off the bench to lead the second half charge, scoring nine of her 13 in the final 20 minutes. Gordon got the Drew lead back down to 16 with 7:05 to play but the Rangers put the game out of reach, opening up their largest lead of the day. A 12-2 run over the next four minutes gave the Rangers a 61-35 advantage with 3:56 to play.

Drew out-rebounded the Fighting Scots, 39-29 and scored 19 points off second chance opportunities. For the second-straight game the Rangers defense was able to force over 20 turnovers. Over the past two days, Ranger opponents have combined for 54 turnovers.

The Rangers will go for their first 3-0 start since 2009 on Wednesday night when they travel to Hackettstown, N.J. to take on Centenary College. Tip is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
