Women's Basketball Rolls in Season Opener

Pittsburgh, PA – The Oberlin College women's basketball team cruised to victory in its season-opening game on Friday nigght, dismantling the Franciscan College Barons 98-64 on the campus of Carnegie Mellon University.

The Yeowomen had five players score in double figures and had 10 players record at least one made field goal in the contest. The 98 points scored by Oberlin are also the most in any game under Head Coach Kerry Jenkins.

Junior sensation Christina Marquette scored 23 points in just 22 minutes, shooting 7-of-13 from the floor and 7-of-8 at the free throw line. She matched teammates Allison Gannon and Katie Lucaites with a team-high six rebounds. Lucaites finished one point shy of a career-high with 13 points, while Gannon added eight.

Sophomore Lindsey Berhardt added 14 points, hitting 4-of-8 triple-tries in the win. Classmate Caroline Hamilton added 10 points as did senior Lillian Jahan.

Senior point guard Malisa Hoak was turnover free, contributing seven points and seven assists in the triumph.

The Barons kept things close in the early part of the first half, trailing by just five at 26-21. However, the Yeowomen were able to create some separation over the final 7:37 of the half to take a 49-34 lead into the locker room.

Oberlin kept up the pressure in the second half, starting the frame on an 18-4 run to go up 67-38 with 14:56 left to play. A Hamilton 3-pointer at the 12:47 mark gave Oberlin its first 30-point lead and from there they never looked back.

The Yeowomen have a short turn around as they go right back to work tomorrow afternoon against Geneva College. The opening tip is set for 3 p.m. at Carnegie Mellon.
