Hardin-Simmons women's basketball coach Shanna Briggs, who is the school's all-time winningest coach, has resigned to take a teaching and coaching position in the Northwest Independent School District.
"My time at Hardin-Simmons has been very special and I have been blessed to coach great young ladies and work with wonderful people," said Briggs. "However, after 11 years, I feel like it is time for something new that provides a much better work-life balance for me. Though I will miss HSU, I am excited about the future."
Briggs had a record of 224-76 in her 11 seasons as the head coach at Hardin-Simmons. She also had the longest postseason run ever by a Hardin-Simmons basketball team in the Division III era. She led the Cowgirls to the Final Four in 2006.
She twice led the Cowgirls to the Elite Eight, went to the NCAA Sweet 16 three times and won a pair of American Southwest Conference titles and four ASC West Division titles.
She became the school's all-time wins leader on Jan. 13, 2011, in a 71-52 win over Sul Ross State. She coached 29 all-ASC performers at HSU.
"We thank Shanna for not only her exemplary service as a coach and a student-athlete, but also for her leadership role on our campus," said HSU athletic director John Neese. "Shanna's accomplishments have added significantly to the legacy of our women's basketball program and our athletic department. We wish her the best of luck as she makes this transition and we are proud of how she and her players have represented Cowgirl basketball."
A full national search will be conducted to find her replacement. Her last day at Hardin-Simmons will be July 3 and her basketball camps set for next week will go on as planned.
