Logan's Heroics Sent Women's Basketball to Eighth Straight NEWMAC Semifinal

Worcester, MA --- Theresa Logan (Southboro, MA) canned a 3-pointer with 1:18 remaining and the WPI defense forced two turnovers in the last minute and a missed jumper in the waning seconds as the fourth-seeded Engineers defeated visiting No. 5 seed Coast Guard 44-43 in a NEWMAC Tournament quarterfinal contest on Wednesday evening. 

With the victory, WPI improves to 15-10 on the season and advances to its eighth straight NEWMAC semifinals where they will meet top seed, host and four-time defending tournament champion Babson on Saturday at at 1pm.  Coast Guard, who was making its first NEWMAC Tournament appearance since 2010, finish at 10-15, doubling its win total from a season ago. 

WPI led 41-38 with four minutes remaining before Victoria Sutherland (Houston, TX) connected on a long-jumper and a 3-pointer to put the Bears up 43-41 with 2:21 left.  After Logan's heroics the Engineers forced a turnover and the senior had a shot at an insurance layup but Alexi Howland (Latham, NY) made a key block for Coast Guard just under a minute left.  

The Crimson and Gray forced another turnover with 20 seconds left but the Bears had one final  chance at the victory after WPI missed the front end of a one-and-one.  Coast Guard let the clock run down, missing on a 17-foot jumper and the subsequent rebound rolled into the corner as time expired.  

Logan tallied 11 of her team-best 13 in the second half and added six rebounds.  The game-winning 3-pointer was her only trifecta of the game and just her fourth of the season.  Dani Davis (East Granby, CT) posted 11 points and 10 rebounds en route to recording her second double-double of the season and third of her career.  Rachel Pineda (Shrewsbury, MA), Cindy Chelius (Northfield, NJ) and Jessica Larsen (San Diego, CA) all chipped in with six points while Pineda doled out a game-high four assists. 

Sutherland netted all 13 of her points for the Bears in the second half.  The freshman guard added 11 board to register her third double-double of the season. Dani Knox (Centreville, VA)  aided the Coast Guard effort on the boards with 10 rebounds while Howland tossed in eight points and Kaitlin Ward (Saline, ME) contributed seven. 

The first half featured five lead changes and four ties.  The teams nearly mirrored each other with Coast Guard shooting 25.8% from the floor while WPI shot 25.0% and each team grabbing 22 rebounds.  A Meghan Fornaro (Charlton, MA) 16-foot jumper with 19 seconds to go before the break helped the visiting Bears to a 18-16 advantage into the locker room at the half.
