Western New England Lands Pair on All-CCC Women's Basketball Team

More news about: Western New England

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Guard Emily Savino and guard/forward Chelsea Vujs of Western New England University have been named to the 2013 All-Commonwealth Coast Conference Women's Basketball Team, Commissioner Gregg M. Kaye announced on Tuesday. Savino, a three-time all-conference selection, repeats on the first team while Vujs made the second unit in her first year wearing a Golden Bears uniform.

"I'm thrilled for Emily and Chelsea's all-conference selection," Western New England coach Nicole Chaszar said. "They both have worked extremely hard throughout the season on both ends of the court.  Our team is extremely excited for this week as we head into our game tonight; we have very high expectations for the postseason (play)."

A senior tri-captain from Ellington (Conn.) High School, Savino ended the regular season as the CCC's leading scorer with 403 points overall, which translates to 16.1 per game. A durable player, she has averaged 36.1 minutes while ranking first in the conference in free throw percentage (.828; 96-116), fourth in assists (92) and seventh in steals (47). She also is second on the team in rebounding at 5.4 per game. She was a third-team all-CCC choice as a freshman when she was voted the 2010 Rookie of the Year. This season alone, she has jumped eight spots to become the fifth-leading scorer in school history with 1,389 points.

Vujs, of Berlin (HS) Conn., made an immediate impact as a freshman by averaging 10.6 points and 8.2 rebounds while starting in 24 of the team's 25 games heading into tonight's CCC tournament quarterfinal game against Endicott at home. She leads the Golden Bears in both field goal shooting at 45.3 percent (111-245) and rebounding (8.2 rpg, 204), which ranks sixth and eighth in the CCC, respectively. She is the reigning CCC Rookie of the Week and received similar accolades from the New England Women's Basketball Association on Jan. 14. She also is one of the league leaders with a team-best eight double-doubles.

All 10 CCC institutions were represented on the all-conference women's basketball team, which was voted upon by each of the league's head coaches along with the list of major individual award winners.
