Fredericksburg, Va. – Marymount University's women's basketball team defeated Capital Athletic Conference rival Mary Washington 42-39 in an overtime thriller on Saturday to claim sole possession of first place in the league standings. With the win the Saints improve to 18-4 on the season, 8-1 in league play, and push their winning-streak to seven games.

Kievanna Lacey paced the Saints with a team-high 13 points while Tynisha Parks posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Katelyn Fischer chipped in seven points to go with five rebounds, five assists and five steals.

In overtime, Parks put the Saints up two on their first offensive possession before a 5-0 run from Mary Washington (15-6, 7-2 CAC) gave the home team a 39-36 lead with just under three minutes to play in the extra frame. Marymount would clamp down defensively, holding the Eagles scoreless the rest of the way while mounting its comeback.

A put-back bucket from Lacey with 53 seconds remaining pulled the Saints within one before the Blue and White shut down the Eagles on their next trip down the court. Fischer then knocked home what would be the game-winner with 22 seconds left before Lacey forced a UMW turnover on their final possession and sealed the win on the other end with a lay-up as time expired.

Featuring two of the top defensive teams in the nation, the first half proved that the showdown between the CAC rivals would be no different. Both teams combined for just 26 points in the opening frame before going into halftime tied 13-13.

In the second half, Mary Washington led by six points at 34-28 with 2:45 remaining in regulation. The Saints would put together a 6-0 run down the stretch capped by a Fischer free throw with seven ticks on the clock to force overtime. Marymount held UMW to just three shots in that span, one of them being a last-second three-pointer to avoid the extra period.

Carol Dye led Mary Washington with 14 points and 15 rebounds for a double-double.

Marymount returns to the hardwood on Wednesday as it travels to face Salisbury in CAC action. The Saints topped the Sea Gulls 63-43 in their earlier meeting this season.
