UMHB women beat Texas Lutheran 73-70

BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team used clutch free throws in the final seconds of its Saturday afternoon contest against Texas Lutheran to grab a 73-70 win over the Bulldogs. The win improves the Cru to 7-15 on the season and 6-11 in American Southwest Conference action. Texas Lutheran falls to 7-17 overall and 5-13 in conference play.
 
Neither team was able to grab more than a three-point lead in the first half, with 11 lead changes and UMHB earning the 33-31 halftime advantage. The Cru maintained a lead over the Bulldogs for the majority of the second half and secured the win on the free-throw line, sinking seven of 10 free throws within the final three minutes of the game.
 
Kourtney Bevers and Jovana Miles led four athletes in double-digits with 17 points each. Samara Williams added 14 points for the Cru while Macy Moore put up 12. Taylor Tucker brought down a team-high 21 rebounds with Miles adding 14. The Cru shot 31.9 percent in the game and 70.3 percent from the free-throw line. UMHB out-rebounded Texas Lutheran 62-34 in the match.
 
Katy Scott led three Texas Lutheran athletes in double-digit figures with 17, while Chasmin Betters added 14 and Italy Taylor put in 12. Scott and Betters each brought down a team-high nine boards. The Bulldogs shot 43.8 percent on the game and 33.3 percent from behind the arc.
 
The Cru will close out its season next week in home matches against Howard Payne on Thursday, Feb. 14 at 5:30 p.m. and Sul Ross State on Saturday, Feb. 16 at 1 p.m.
