LEXINGTON, Ky. – Transylvania spotted Rose-Hulman an early 15-point lead Saturday before rallying only to fall 59-58 as a last second shot refused to drop in a tense women's Heartland Conference basketball contest at the Beck Center.
 
Transy, the HCAC league leader, is now 16-5, 12-2 in the conference after seeing its eight-game win streak halted. The Engineers improved their record to 11-10, 7-7 in the league play, and made a significant step toward qualifying for the HCAC tourney later this month.
 
Transy came into play with a two-game lead in the HCAC race.
 
Transy fell behind by as many as 15 points in the early going before cutting its deficit to 12, 33-21, at the break. The Pioneers hit only six of 22 from the field for 27 percent while the Engineers were 12 of 26 for 46 percent.  
 
Transy was also on the short end of a 25-6 deficit on the boards, but the Pioneers made up for that by forcing 15 Rose-Hulman turnovers while committing just eight.
 
Madisen Webb led Transy with seven first-half points, a total matched by Nicole Coffman. Carrie Morris topped Rose-Hulman nine points.
 
Things improved for the Pioneers over the final 20 minutes with Transy outscoring Rose-Hulman, 37-26. A layup by Katelyn Smith at the 7:31 mark made it 53-50 and Transy got within one, 57-56, on two Coffman free throws with a minute to go.
 
Rose-Hulman got a layup to go back up by three, but Coffman answered with a goal with a half-minute to go. Rose-Hulman turned it over, but Smith missed a jumper and committed a foul.
 
When the Engineers missed the front end of the bonus with nine seconds left, Transy had a chance to pull out an improbably win. Transy would call time out with just over a second to go to set up a jumper by Coffman, but it just rolled out.
 
Transy wound up shooting 36 percent for the game compared to 50 percent for the Engineers. Rose also had a 40-18 rebounding edge, but finished with 28 turnovers, which kept the home team in the game. Transy outscored the Engineers 20-6 in points off turnovers.
 
Coffman finished with 26 points and Webb added 15. Addie Johnson led Rose-Hulman with 13 points and Morris added 11.
 
Rose-Hulman had 23 field goals to 18 for Transy, but the Pioneers outscored the Engineers from the free throw line, 19-8.
 
The Pioneers will be back in action on Wednesday when they host Mt. St. Joseph for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
