Valle, Scott Lead Women's Basketball to Victory over Brockport, 67-58

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Freshman forward Michelle Valle (New York, N.Y./Manhattan Center for Science/Mathematics) and junior forward Jeanette Scott (West Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) each recorded a double-double to lead the State University of New York at New Paltz women's basketball team (16-1, 10-1 SUNYAC) to a bounce-back victory over The College at Brockport (6-13, 3-9 SUNYAC), 67-58, in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) matchup on Saturday at Jim and John Vlogianitis Gymnasium.
 
Valle picked up a career-high 18 points and tied her career mark with 14 rebounds. Scott matched Valle with 18 points, also a career-best, while matching her career-high with 10 boards. This marks the fourth double-double of Valle's career, and the second for Scott.
 
The Hawks never trailed in Saturday's win. Senior forward Alex McCullough (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) opened the scoring with a three-pointer on the opening play of the game. Senior guard Kahsyrah Bryant (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) was fouled on a successful layup, and sank the ensuing free throw, to push the Hawk advantage to 12-3 at the 15:23 mark. Brockport cut the lead to one at the 10:08 mark, but the Hawks bounced right back to eventually take a 30-23 lead into the intermission.
 
New Paltz led by as many as 15 points in the second half, which took place when junior guard Alyssa Gratien(Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) drained a three with 8:16 to go, but the Golden Eagles kept themselves in the game and cutting the deficit to six with 98 seconds to play. The Hawks were successful on crucial free throws in the waning seconds of the game to hold off the rallying Golden Eagles and secure the victory.
 
Ellen Story led Brockport with 14 points, while Cecilia Sigrist picked up 13 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Hannalee Fordyce also contributed 10 points for the Golden Eagles in the loss.
 
The Hawks shot 32.4 percent (24-of-74) from the field in the win, which was bested by Brockport, which shot 37 percent on 20-of-54 shooting. New Paltz had its second-best outing from the charity stripe of the season, shooting 73.9 percent by succeeding on 17-of-23 attempts. Brockport, however, shot 82.4 percent (14-of-17) from the line in the loss.
 
The Hawks have a chance to start a new winning streak on Tuesday, Jan. 29, when they travel to Danbury, Conn., to take on Western Connecticut State University in a non-conference matchup. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
