More news about: UW-Whitewater

Eau Claire led 5-4 with 18:29 left in the first half -- and that was the last time the Blugolds were in front.  Over the next four minutes Whitewater went on an 11-0 run, putting the Warhawks in front 15-5, the first double digit lead of the contest.  A Cortney Kumerow layup with 10:56 left in the half gave UW-W its largest lead of the half, 23-10.  UW-W went into the locker room with a 29-20 lead.

The Warhawks scored 14 of their first half points off turnovers, and scored 14 points in the paint to eight for the Blugolds.

With UW-W leading 33-20 at 18:31 in the second half, UW-EC used an 8-0 spurt to close within 33-28 at the 15:53 mark.  With 12:26 left Morgan Rustad's jumper inched EC closer, 35-31, but that was as close as it would get.  Two Kumerow free throws at 10:29 had the UW-W margin back in double digits, 42-31.  Twice in the closing minutes, 53-36 with 3:48 on the clock and 57-40 with just 1:33 remaining, the Warhawk lead reached 17.

The Warhawk defense limited UW-EC to 35% shooting from the floor, and just 1-10 from beyond the arc.  Whitewater shot 46%, including 5-14 from long range.

Guard Mary Merg and forward Megan Theune scored 13 and 11 points, respectively, for the Warhawks, with Kumerow topping the team with seven rebounds.  The Warhawks had ten players break into the scoring column.  Eau Claire did not have any players score in double figures.  Center Riley Shannon was the game's top rebounder with eight.

UW-Whitewater will continue WIAC play at UW-La Crosse Wednesday.  The next home contest for the Warhawks will be February 9 at 3:00, with UW-Superior visiting Kachel Gym in Williams Center.  The Superior game, also the annual Alumni Day, is one of three home contests that will close out the regular season for UW-W.
