Second half surge pushes Wisconsin Lutheran past Edgewood College

MADISON, Wis. - In a game that featured 13 ties and 11 lead changes, the Edgewood College women's basketball team held a narrow one-point halftime lead, but could not come out on top. The Eagles battled back and forth with Wisconsin Lutheran but six Warrior free throws in the final 40 seconds sealed Edgewood College's fate by a score of 58-50 in the Edgedome on Saturday night.

The Eagles (9-10, 8-4 NAC) started slow after missing their first two shots and committing a pair of turnovers but rallied back with a jumper byMelanie Walker and a triple by Chelsey Watkinsto take a 5-2 lead. With 11 minutes remaining in the half and the score tied at 11, the Warriors threatened to break the game open. Five straight Wisconsin Lutheran (14-2, 9-0 NAC) free throws pushed the Warriors lead to five, but the Eagles fought back to tie the contest at 16 after a pair of free throws by Alison Tobin and a three-pointer byMariah Hill. The two teams were neck and neck the rest of the half, but with 29 seconds left, Tobin hit two from the charity stripe, giving the Eagles a 24-23 lead at the break. Although Edgewood College shot eight percent lower than Wisconsin Lutheran, the Eagles were able to take advantage of 13 offensive rebounds, converting 11 second chance points to only three by the Warriors.

Wisconsin Lutheran opened up the second half on a layup, but a basket by Rachel Pope sparked a 9-3 run, giving Edgewood College their largest lead of the game at six. The Warriors battled back to tie the game at 41 when they went on a run of their own. Wisconsin Lutheran scored the next five points of the game but Edgewood College quickly erased the deficit and jumped out to a 49-46 advantage with 5:50 remaining. From that point on, the Eagles struggled to get any good looks off and missed five shots and three bonus free throws. Meanwhile, Wisconsin Lutheran used six straight points by Melanie Laete and by four free throws by Shavon Dillon to ice the game and come away with the victory.

Edgewood College improved their shooting in the second half, hitting 8-for-25 (32.0 percent) of their shots including seven of 11 free throw attempts. Although the Warriors entered the game last in the conference in free throw percentage, Wisconsin Lutheran hit 75 percent (18-for-24) from the stripe.

Tobin was the Eagles leading scorer with 16 points while also pulling down five boards. Walker matched her season-high with 10 boards including three offensive. Hill also scored in double figures with 11.
