VWC offense stalls in late minutes in loss at EMU

HARRISONBURG, Va.  -- Eastern Mennonite University outscored Virginia Wesleyan College 16-2 at the start of the second half Saturday and went to to post a 70-54 Old Dominion Athletic Conference women's basketball victory. The visiting Marlins (10-7, 5-3) trailed just 32-30 at halftme and tied the game in the opening seconds of the second half when sophomore Nancy Kelly (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) scored off an assist from Brittany Glasco (Fredericksburg/Massaponax).  VWC tied the game again at 34, but Bianca Ygarza (Conestoga, Pa./Penn Manor) hit a free throw for the Royals (11-5, 7-1) that ignited the EMU run that ended a tight contest...briefly.  Virginia Wesleyan came right back with a 17-2 run in a span of seven minutes to pull within a 52-51 score with 7:09 remaining to be played.  Junior Katie Tassa (Bristow/Manassas Osbourn Park) scored four points in a balanced run that included five Marlins scoring. But, the offense ended there for Virginia Wesleyan, which managed only three points in the remaining time on the clock.  EMU outscored the Marlins 18-3 down the stretch to take the win. Sophomore Andrea Paphites (Virginia Beach/Princess Anne) led Virginia Wesleyan with 11 points, followed by Kelly with 10.  Kelly recorded a double-double, leading VWC on the boards with 10 rebounds. The Marlins hit only 34% from the field overall, while EMU hit 50%.  Eastern Mennonite, which hit 20-of-29 free throws as compared to 8-of-13 by the Marlins, was led by Keyla Baltimore (Bristow/Brentsville), Kayla Yoders (Myerstown, Pa./East Lebanon County), Shakeera Sykes (Dumfries/Forest Park), and Ygarza, each with 11 points.  Baltimore hit 9-of-12 freebies to lead EMU at the stripes. Sykes pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds to lead EMU, which won the battle of the boards 40-30. Virginia Wesleyan competes again on Tuesday, Jan. 22, hosting Shenandoah University at 7 p.m. at the Jane P. Batten Student Center. --AMDG--
