Second-Half Surge Leads Salisbury Past St. Mary’s Women’s Basketball

St. Mary's City, Md. – Senior Joanna Murray (Reisterstown, Md./Franklin) notched a game-high 22 points as the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball team dropped a 78-69 Capital Athletic Conference decision to Salisbury University Saturday afternoon.

Murray led a trio of Seahawk double-digit scorers as she connected on a career-high five three-pointers while junior Sophie Pruden (Carrboro, N.C./Chapel Hill) was one rebound shy of a double-double with 18 points and nine boards.  Junior forward Marché Pearson (Baltimore, Md./Laurel) chipped in 10 points and eight caroms for St. Mary's.

The Seahawks (8-8, 2-4 CAC) dominated the first half by outshooting Salisbury 46.7% to 22.6% from the field, including posting a 6-of-10 effort from downtown as Murray was 4-of-5.  She finished with 14 first-half points to lead all players at halftime.

Senior guard Pui Sham's (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) jumper at 11:32 gave St. Mary's a double-digit advantage that the Seahawks held for the rest of the first half.  The home team was up by 19 with 2:11 left in the first 20 minutes as Murray drilled her fourth long-range shot before heading into the locker room with a 39-22 halftime margin.

The second half belonged to Salisbury (9-7, 4-1 CAC) as the Sea Gulls could not miss, making 54.5% of their shots and going 17-of-20 from the free throw line.  SU went on a 24-6 tear over an 11-minute span to knot the game at 52-52 on a three-pointer by sophomore guard Courtney McManus (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) with 7:38 left in the game.

The teams traded baskets for the next four minutes before Salisbury outscored the Seahawks 15-6 in the final three minutes to pick its fourth conference win and move into a tie for second place with Marymount (Va.) University in the league standings.

Senior forward Katie McGahagan (Baltimore, Md./Northeast) recorded a double-double with 18 points and game-high 10 caroms while junior forward Becca Himes (Frederick, Md./Urbana) added 17 points and eight boards.  McManus and sophomore guard Anna Hackett (Germantown, Md./Clarksburg) each chipped in 13 points.

St. Mary's will be idle until next Saturday, January 26 when the Seahawks travel to York College of Pennsylvania for another league matchup at 1:00 pm.
