#22 Moravian Rolls Past Susquehanna, 86-42, to Move to 7-0 in Landmark Conference Action

SELINSGROVE, Pa. --- The 22nd-ranked Moravian College women's basketball team used a hot-shooting first half and a balanced scoring attack to post an 86-42 Landmark Conference win over host Susquehanna University Saturday afternoon as the Greyhounds finish the first half of the conference slate undefeated.

The Greyhounds, who are 16-2 overall and 7-0 in Landmark Conference action, jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a rebound and basket from sophomore forward Alexis Wright at the 18:43 mark. The Crusaders would get on the board with a three-pointer from senor guard Shannon Grunwald at 18:22 before junior guard Danielle Brogan answered with a three-pointer for Moravian. Grunwald tied the game at 5-5 with a lay-up before senior guard Amanda Krueder put the Greyhounds back in front by two points.

Junior guard Katie O'Rourke hit on two free throws at 15:31, and Kreuder made a lay-up after a turnover to push the Greyhounds' advantage to 11-5 just five minutes into the game. Back-to-back lay-ups from Wright and Kreuder gave Moravian a ten-point lead, 15-5, with 13:42 left in the first half. The Greyhounds' run would hit 16 straight points on baskets from freshman forward Alesha Marcks, Kreuder and junior forward Laura Jordan for a 21-5 edge with 11:36 still to play in the first half.

Susquehanna, which falls to 6-11 overall and 1-5 in conference action, would finally stop Moravian's run with a lay-up by sophomore guard Eleni Dimou at the 11:07 mark. The Greyhounds would answer and move ahead by 18 points, 25-7, on a three-point play from Wright with ten minutes left before the intermission, and Moravian's lead moved past the 20-point mark at 29-7 on a three-pointer from Brogan.

Marcks would hit on a jumper and follow it with two free throws at the 5:00 mark as the Greyhounds' lead moved past a 30-point advantage at 40-9. Junior forward Candance Cannady would stop Moravian's run with a lay-up. The Greyhounds would head to the locker room with a 48-14 lead after a three-pointer from freshman guard Steph Peterson, a season high for points in the first half of a game for the Greyhounds.

Moravian had a hot shooting hand in the opening 20 minutes as the Greyhounds went 18-for-31 from the floor (58.1 percent), four-for-seven behind the three-point line and eight-for-13 at the foul line. The Crusaders struggled to shoot in the first half, making just six-of-33 field goal attempts (18.2 percent), one-of-seven three-pointers and their only free throw attempt. Both squads grabbed 21 rebounds in the opening 20 minutes but Moravian committed just five turnovers while Susquehanna had 14 turnovers.

Jordan hit a lay-up 43 seconds into the half to open the scoring for the Greyhounds in the second half. O'Rourke would push Moravian's lead over 40-points to 55-14 with a lay-up at 17:18. Susquehanna's first points of the second half would be a layup from senior guard Ainsley Rossitto at the 14:42 mark. The Greyhounds' advantage would reach 50 points, 66-16, on a three-pointer from Peterson with 12:12 left in the contest.

Moravian's shooting cooled a little in the second half as the Greyhounds made 15-of-31 field goal attempts (48.4 percent), two-of-four three-pointers and six-of-14 free throws in the final 20 minutes of action. Moravian finished with 12 turnovers in the game while Susquehanna had 24 turnovers. The Crusaders finished the contest with a 47-44 edge in rebounds, just the second time in 18 games this season that the Greyhounds have been out-rebounded. Susquehanna's shooting improved in the second half as the Crusaders made 12-of-38 field goal attempts (31.6 percent) and four-of-seven free throw attempts.

Brogan led four Moravian scorers in double figures with 12 points on four three-pointers. Wright finished with 11 points and eight rebounds while Kreuder and Marcks each had ten points with Marcks grabbing five boards. Peterson tossed in a career high eight points while Jordan finished with six points and six rebounds. O'Rourke had six assists, five rebounds and four points for the Greyhounds while freshman guard Emily MacDonnell added five points. Junior forward Ericka Blair added four points and two boards. Freshman guard Audrey Schiavone added five points and a pair of assists for the Greyhounds while freshman guard Marie Rossignoli had three points. Moravian had 15 players see at least seven minutes of action in the contest with 13 of them scoring in the victory.

Gina Palazzi was the only Susquehanna player in double figures with ten points to go with eight rebounds. Grunwald finished with nine points and a game high ten rebounds while Dimou tossed in nine points and added three assists. Mariah Monahan added six assists, five points and five rebounds while Cannady contributed seven rebounds and four points.

Moravian will return to action Wednesday, January 23rd when the Greyhounds host The University of Scranton in a Landmark Conference contest beginning at 7:00 p.m. in Johnston Hall.
