UMHB women edged by Texas Lutheran 61-59

Seguin, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team stormed back to tie the game twice in the final minutes, but a last-second attempt at the game-winner was off the mark as the Cru lost a 61-59 decision to Texas Lutheran University Thursday night in Seguin. The UMHB women fall to 2-13 overall and 1-9 in American Southwest Conference play with the loss. The Bulldogs improve to 6-11 overall and 4-7 in the ASC with the victory.

Texas Lutheran led by eight points at 49-41 with 6:35 remaining in the game before the Cru fought back. Samara Williams and Macy Moore each scored to tie the game at 53 and 55. Kourtney Bevers gave UMHB its first lead of the second half at 57-55 with 2:03 left to play. TLU retook the lead with a 4-0 run before Bevers hit two free throws to tie it at 59 with 57 seconds to go. Katy Scott's lay-in put the Bulldogs up 61-59 with 39 seconds on the clock. Bevers would have a chance to win it at the buzzer for the Cru, but her three-point attempt was blocked by Italy Taylor of the Bulldogs. TLU led 28-21 at halftime.

Bevers led UMHB with 16 points and she was 8-8 from the free-throw line to earn Schlotzsky's Lotz Better Player of the Game honors. Williams added 15 points and Moore scored 11. Jovana Miles pulled down a team-high 13 rebounds for the Cru. UMHB played without leading scorer and rebounder Taylor Tucker, who missed the game with an illness. The Cru shot 37 percent from the field and forced 26 turnovers in the game.

Scott topped TLU with 20 points and nine rebounds. Taylor and Chasmin Betters chipped in 15 points apiece. The Bulldogs shot 51 percent from the floor in the victory.

Thursday night's game opens a six-game conference road trip for the UMHB women. The Cru will return to action with a 1:00 PM tip-off at Schreiner University Saturday in Kerrville.
