#6 Amherst Tops Kean

UNION, N.J. (1/14/13) – Senior Erika Jones recorded her fifth straight double-double, but it wasn't enough as #6/5 Amherst College defeated the Kean University women's basketball team 81-53 on Monday evening.

Senior Marcia Voigt scored 20 points, while classmate Jasmine Hardy chipped in with 15 points (all treys), 10 rebounds and seven assists for the Lord Jeffs (15-0).  Jones finished with a career-high 34 points and 12 rebounds for the Cougars (3-11).

The Cougars jumped out to an early 7-4 lead, as sophomore Meghan Williams shot a three pointer to give the Cougars the three point advantage three minutes into the contest. The Lord Jeffs countered back with a 12-0 run, led by six points by Hardy. It was the Cougars turn to rally and trailing 22-11 were able to trim the lead down to a single point. Over the three minute stretch, Jones poured in 12 points, to help close the gap with 5:41 remaining. The Lord Jeffs closed the half on a 14-5 run, sending them into halftime with a 42-30 advantage.

Jones tallied 21 points in the first 20 minutes with seven rebounds while Voigt contributed with 12 points for Amherst.

In the second half, the Cougars were able to get as close as 14 as Jones knocked down a three ball with 11:04 to go, but Amherst took over and scored the next 19 points, jumping ahead to a 75-42 advantage, as Voigt poured in eight points in the half, while senior Bridget Crowley had seven.

Amherst held a commanding 53-32 advantage on the boards while each team was equal in turnovers in the contest.

Sophomore Savannah Holness added 10 points and eight assists off the bench for the Lord Jeffs, while sophomore Shay Collins chipped in with eight assists and senior Kyanne Sager had five rebounds for the Cougars.

The Cougars return home Wednesday January 16 as they take on Richard Stockton at 6 p.m., while Amherst returns home Friday January 18 to take on Bowdoin at 8 p.m.
