Cortland Women Defeat Fredonia, 53-44

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Freshman Caysen Cohen and junior Megan Touhey scored nine points apiece as Cortland defeated visiting Fredonia, 53-44. With the win, the Red Dragons improved to 3-3 in the SUNYAC (5-7 overall) and took over sole possession of fifth place in the 10-team league standings.

Cohen also led Cortland with seven rebounds and four assists. Touhey finished with six rebounds and three assists and freshman Shannon White registered seven points, three assists and a team-best four steals. Sophomore Lindsey Minor also scored seven points.

Jaimie Warren led Fredonia (7-5 overall, 2-4 SUNYAC) with 19 points and 10 rebounds. She made 5-of-8 three-pointers. Becky Hebert added 12 points and Sabrina Macaulay shared the team lead with 10 rebounds.

Cortland shot only 33 percent from the floor, but held Fredonia to 28 percent shooting. The Red Dragons also took advantage of 33 turnovers by the Blue Devils.

The Red Dragons scored the game's first 10 points and kept Fredonia from scoring for nearly six minutes. Cortland led 16-3 with less than nine minutes left in the first half and went into halftime with a 29-16 advantage.

Fredonia opened the second half on an 11-2 run and was within 31-27 after Hebert hit a three-pointer with 14:15 left. Cortland answered with a Minor free throw and a Grace Williamson three-point play to go up by eight. Grace Moore hit two foul shots for Fredonia with 12:32 left, but Touhey made a jumper on Cortland's next possession and the Red Dragons led by a range of 7-13 points the rest of the game.

Cortland will host Geneseo next Friday, Jan. 18, at 6 p.m.
