Women’s Hoops Fall in Superior

More news about: UW-Whitewater

The UW-Superior guard duo of Sally Linzmeier and Connie Urmanski combined for 46 points to lead the Yellowjackets to a 67-59 win over fifteenth ranked UW-Whitewater, giving the Warhawks their first loss in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, Saturday afternoon in Mortorelli Gym in Superior, Wisconsin.  Whitewater is 12-4 overall and 6-1 in the league, with Superior now 13-3 and 5-2.

Whitewater blasted away from a 7-7 tie to a 28-16 lead, ending with Emily McCullick's jumper at 7:46 to give the Warhawks their biggest lead of the half.  Superior whittled it back to single digits, 36-30 by halftime.

UW-W had just seven turnovers in the first half, out-scoring UW-S 8-3 in points off turnovers.  Although Whitewater went just 1-11 from beyond the arc and shot 32% overall, the Warhawks made up with a 13-15 half at the free throw line.  Superior shot 29% from the floor and 12-18 from the line.  Senior guard Connie Urmanski and sophomore guard Sally Linzmeier had ten points apiece for the Yellowjackets in the first half, with Linzmeier adding six rebounds.  Senior center Cortney Kumerow led the Warhawks with nine points and seven rebounds.

Whitewater got off to a quick start on the second half, holding a 41-32 lead after junior guard Kaitlyn Thill's free throw at 15:54.  But over the next three and a half minutes the Yellowjackets out-scored UW-W 12-3 to knot the game at 44-44 on Linzmeier's layup.

The Warhawks held a slim lead for the next couple of minutes, and the game was still tied at 52-52 and 54-54, the latter at 7:37 on a layup by senior forward Megan Theune for Whitewater.

That seemed to trip a switch in the Yellowjackets, and they tore off an 11-1 run for a 65-55 lead on Kristen Nett's layup with 1:15 left, effectively sealing the deal.  That ten point margin, equaled again at 67-57, was the largest of the game for either team.  Linzmseier and Urmanski combined to score the last six points for the Yellowjackets.

Whitewater's shooting percentage slipped in the second half to 28%, bringing the game mark to 30%, including 4-21 from three point range.  Superior hit 42% of their shots from the field.   UW-W committed 12 turnovers and forced 17, and UW-S won the battle on the boards 44-38.

Kumerow, approaching 1,000 points and 500 rebounds in her career, led UW-W with a double double, with 13 points and ten rebounds.  Junior guard Mary Merg added 11 points and Theune 10.  Merg also led Whitewater with three steals.  Linzmeier took game honors with 23 points, including 11-14 free throws, and the 5-7 guard pulled down 16 rebounds.  She also added game highs with six assists and four steals for good measure.  The other half of the Yellowjackets' dynamic duo, Urmanski, also scored 23 points on 9-12 shooting.

UW-Whitewater will travel to UW-Oshkosh to take on the Titans Wednesday, and return home to host UW-Stout Saturday at 6:00 in Kachel Gym of Williams Center.  The Saturday date is part of a doubleheader with the Warhawk men, who will tip off against the Blue Devils at 4:00 in the annual Treyton Kilar Kids' Day event.
