Lady Royals Roll To 85-38 Victory Over Goucher

Fourteen players found the scoring column as The University of Scranton women's basketball team found its shooting touch en route to an 85-38 victory over Goucher College on Saturday afternoon in the Long Center.

Scranton (11-4, 3-1 Landmark) was led by sophomore forward Meredith Mesaris (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax), who had 15 points. Freshman guard Jaclyn Gantz (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) had a career-high 13 points, senior forward Erin Boggan (Danbury, Conn./Danbury) had 10 points and seven rebounds, and junior forward Katie Sherry (Havertown, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) had a career-high nine points in the victory.

The Lady Royals started the game making just three of their first 16 field goal attempts, but shot nearly 50 percent the rest of the way to cruise to the victory. They opened up a 38-16 lead at halftime by connecting on seven 3-pointers, including three by Gantz and two by sophomore guard Stephanie Keyes (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./ArchbishopWood), who was playing in her first home game since transferring to Scranton from West Chester University following the first semester.

Scranton put the game away by shooting 50 percent (18-for-36) in the second half. Mesaris had 14 points and Sherry scored all nine of her points in the second half.

The Lady Royals finished the game shooting 41.7 percent (30-for-72) from the field, including 9-for-24 (37.5 percent) from 3-point range. Sophomore guard Lindsay Fluehr (Bensalem, Pa./Nazareth Academy) and freshman guard Noelle Alicea (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) had five assists each. Scranton won the rebounding battle, 45-36, and forced 28 turnovers by the Gophers while committing just 12 of their own.

Scranton is now tied for second in the Landmark Conference with Catholic at 3-1. Moravian, which defeated Catholic on Saturday, 62-59, is in first place at 5-0.

The 47-point margin of victory was the largest for the Lady Royals since a 53-point victory (91-38) over Goucher on Feb. 4, 2011, in the Long Center.

Goucher (5-9, 1-3 Landmark) got 10 points from junior guard Sharnell Huff (Bowie, Md./Bowie) and eight points and six rebounds from freshman center Amaka Ezeani (Silver Spring, Md./Paint Branch).

Scranton returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 15, when it travels to Madison, N.J. to take on Drew University in a Landmark Conference game at 7 p.m.
