NEW YORK CITY – Senior guard Evy Iacono (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) recorded her first career double-double with 21 points and a career high-tying 10 rebounds to lift the Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team to a 57-42 victory versus host New York University in University Athletic Association action on Friday evening inside the Jerome S. Coles Center.

The Spartans improve to 9-4 overall and 1-1 in the UAA heading into a Sunday afternoon contest with Brandeis University (Mass.) at 2:00 p.m. in Boston. With the loss, the Violets fall to 7-6 overall and 0-2 in the Association.

The field half was a defensive struggle, and Case limited the Violets to just 25 percent shooting on 8-of-25 from the floor. With the score 13-12 in favor of NYU at 8:47, the visitors rattled off a 12-2 run that covered 6:03 of action and included a pair of baskets each from senior forward Marissa Miles (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry) and sophomore forward Berit Eppard (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek). The two sides then exchanged baskets over the duration of the stanza, and the Spartans took a 10-point advantage of 28-18 into the locker room.

In the second, Case maintained its double-digit lead and built a 14-point edge, 46-32, with 15:57 left following a jumper by Iacono via an assist from senior point guard Erica Iafelice (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover). Not done yet, NYU chipped away and cut the lead to six, 48-42, on a pair of free throws from Melissa Peng with 3:34 left. However, the Spartans halted the NYU comeback attempt by outscoring the hosts 9-0 over the final minutes with a pair of key baskets from sophomore forward Brooke Orcutt (Morrison, Colo./Dakota Ridge).

In addition to Iacono's 21 points, Orcutt posted a career-high 14 markers on 7-of-10 shooting to go along with seven rebounds. Miles, Eppard and senior center Emily Mueller (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) each chipped in with six points.

Megan Dawe led three Violets in double figures with 13 points and seven boards, while Nicole Lem and Cassidy Jourdan each added 10 markers.

For the game, the Spartan defense limited NYU to just 28.6% shooting (16-of-56) from the floor, marking the 10th time this winter it has held opponents below 40% shooting and third time below 30%.
