ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, NY (January 8, 2013) – The Vassar College women's basketball team found that defense of its consecutive Liberty League Championships won't come easily. Using a decisive second half, keyed by a career best 26 points from sophomore Colleen O'Connell, the Brewers ran away from a determined Bard College team to register a 79-53 victory on Tuesday night at Stevenson Athletic Center.

It wasn't until the 12:55 mark of the second half that Vassar pulled away. The first half was tied six times and had four lead changes. Bard held a 20-19 lead following a jumper in the paint by freshman guard Blanka Bell with 5:28 before halftime. The Brewers regained the lead for good with back-to-back jumpers by forwards Hannah Senftleber and Natalie Allen.

Blanka brought Bard within 23-22 with another jumper at the 3:29 mark and erased a late 27-22 Vassar lead and had the contest tied 28-28 at intermission.

With the victory, Vassar improved to 8-0 all-time against Bard and 8-1, 1-0 on the season. Bard fell to 6-6, 0-3. The Brewers will travel to St. Lawrence for a Liberty League contest at 6:00 p.m. Bard next heads to Clarkson on Friday night.

The Brewers won handedly despite a four-point game from junior guard Cydni Matsuoka, who entered the contest with a 20.4 average, 20th best in the nation. Matsuoka, who played just 24 minutes, had nine assists. O'Connell more than compensated with her season and career best, accomplished in just 20 minutes of action and a scorching 13 of 15 from the field. She scored 22 of her 26 points in the second half.

The game remained contested for the first seven minutes of the second half. With 12:55 to play, Bard was behind just 46-41. But over the next five minutes, Vassar went on a 14-0 run to build its lead to 60-41 with 7:54 to play. Five different Brewers got into the scoring action during this spurt, which effectively put the game away.

Vassar got a 10-point game from freshman guard Caitlin Drakeley, who also had seven steals.

Bard was led by an impressive double-double from freshman forward Tytravia Riley who had 19 points and 19 rebounds. Blanka had 12 points and seven rebounds.
