BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England Nor'easters pulled away with a 25-4 run down the stretch to defeat Roger Williams University, 74-53, in Commonwealth Coast Conference women's basketball action Saturday (Jan. 5) afternoon at the Harold Alfond Forum.

Sophomore forward Kelly Coleman (Portland, Conn.) scored a career-best 23 points, including 17 after halftime, to lead the Nor'easters (6-4, 3-0 CCC). She also grabbed 11 rebounds and added five steals. First-year guard Sadie DiPierro (South Portland, Maine) came off the bench to net 13 points, while classmate Lauren Hayden (Chatilly, Va.) added 10 points, seven boards, five assists and five steals.

Roger Williams (5-6, 1-3) was led by senior forward Alexandria Lanieri (Port Jefferson, N.Y.), who recorded 14 points, 14 boards and three blocked shots. Junior Ari Renwick (Westwood, Mass.) contributed 13 points and four steals, and junior Kaitlyn Bovee (Berlin, Conn.) added 11 points.

Leading 40-23 at the break, the Nor'easters saw their lead evaporate early in the second half. Roger Williams opened the frame with a 15-2 run over the opening 5:46 to slice its deficit to four (42-38). Lanieri tallied six points during the run.

After UNE scored the next three points to push its lead back up to seven (45-38), the Hawks reeled off eight consecutive points for their first lead (46-45) since the opening bucket of the contest.

Big Blue senior Beth Suggs (Bath, Maine) gave the hosts the lead back with a layup, then Coleman followed with a fastbreak conversion to give UNE a three-point (49-46) margin. Roger Williams then drew even when Renwick nailed a trey to tie the tilt at 49.

From that point, it was all UNE. Coleman put Big Blue ahead for good with a three-pointer at the 7:24 mark. After a couple of scoreless minutes, DiPierro contributed eight points and Coleman five during a 2:34 span as the Nor'easters built a 65-51 cushion to seize control.

The first half was tight for the opening eight minutes until UNE cobbled together a 12-0 run to establish a 27-15 advantage. Five different players scored during the spurt, which was capped by a DiPierro layup with 7:17 remaining. The Nor'easters were able to build their 17-point halftime lead thanks in part to 21 Roger Williams turnovers.

For the game, UNE forced 33 Hawk miscues while pulling down 17 offensive rebounds.

Both teams return to action Tuesday (Jan. 8). The Nor'easters head to Wenham, Mass. for a 7:30 p.m. game at Gordon College, and Roger Williams hosts Curry College at 8 p.m.
