Blugold Women's Basketball Falls Just Short Against Nationally-Ranked Pointers

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The UW-Eau Claire women's basketball team fell to 18th-ranked UW-Stevens Point in a close game, losing 51-49 on Ken Anderson Court in Zorn Arena today.

The two teams stayed close all game long.  With the lead changing hands twice while the score was tied at three other times in the first half, the Pointers led 30-26 at the end of the opening half.

The Blugolds came out stronger in the second half, eventually taking a two point lead after a Courtney Lewis (So.-Prairie Du Chien, Wis.) layup plus a made free throw after a Pointer foul on the shot.

From there, both teams continued to trade baskets until Pointer Myranda Tyler secured the UW-Stevens Point victory with a free throw with 1:09 left in the game. She gave Stevens Point a two-point lead and neither team scored the rest of the night.

Sarah Bingea (Sr.-Delano, Minn.) led the Blugolds offensively with a game-high 16 points.  Cady Roedl (Fr.-Beaver Dam, Wis.) also contributed 10 points. Rachel Egdorf (So.-Mishicot, Wis.) finished with a game-high 10 rebounds.

The Blugolds struggled with turnovers in the game, finishing with 19 turnovers to UW-Stevens Point's nine. The Pointers scored 18 points off turnovers while Eau Claire had three.

The loss was the third straight for the Blugolds. Before this streak, the Blugolds were carrying a three game winning streak.

The Blugolds drop to 7-8 overall (2-4 WIAC).  The Pointers advanced to 11-3 on the season and 3-2 in the WIAC.

The Blugolds' next game will be played Wednesday against UW-Oshkosh in Zorn Arena.  It will be a youth night game and will begin at 7 p.m.
