GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The 25th-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team remained unbeaten with a 62-50 win Friday night, dropping Greensboro College (6-2, 2-1) in USA South Athletic Conference action. The Captains improved to 10-0 on the season, with a 3-0 mark against league opponents. Sophomore Camry Green posted her sixth double-double of the year, hauling in a game-high 15 rebounds to go with 10 points.

CNU shook off a tough night shooting the ball by playing stellar defense, forcing 20 Greensboro turnovers and earning 23 points off of giveaways. The Captains shot just 30.6% from the floor (19-62), including a 1-for-15 performance from long-range, but the defense held the home team to just 29.8% shooting on 17-of-57 from the field.

After getting the opening bucket from senior Kelly Halverson, the Captains went cold and Greensboro took advantage with a 9-0 run. With the score 9-2 and 13:11 remaining, though, CNU locked down defensively and posted a 23-7 run the rest of the way to take a nine-point edge at halftime, 25-16. The Captains allowed just one point over a stretch of nearly seven and a half minutes in the middle of the half, building the lead to what was then a game-high.

With both teams shooting less than 22% in the first half, it was Greensboro that would turn their fortunes first in the second. The league's leading scorer and rebounder, Bianca Richburg, was held to just two points in the first half, but with a pair of three-pointers in the Pride's opening possessions, she caught fire and had Greensboro back within five, 29-24.

It was then the Captains' lone three-pointer  of the night that held off any further comeback and triggered the CNU offense into gear. Rookie Jordan Miller knocked down a trey from the wing, responding to Richburg's second and getting the lead back to eight. She added a traditional three-point play with 12:09 remaining that triggered an 8-2 run, giving CNU its biggest edge at 13 points, 42-29. Miller finished the game with 10 points, her second career double-figure output.

The Captains lead would build to as many as 15 with 4:36 remaining when Nicole Mitchell knocked down a pair of free-throws and made the score 56-41, but the Pride answered with another surge. Seven straight points from the home team had the game back to eight with two minutes remaining, but steady free-throw shooting and a pair of key turnovers left CNU in control. Andrea Hobbs and Chantal Thomas combined to go 6-for-6 from the charity stripe in the final 1:05, and Green snagged a key turnover in the final minute.

The steal was CNU's 13th in the game, running the season average to 13.5 per game. The Captains have now held eight of their first ten opponents to 55 points or less and a 51.9 ppg average.

Junior Tia Perry led the Captains in scoring, with  13 points, while adding six rebounds, three assists and three steals. Green had a block and two steals to go with her 10 points and 15 rebounds, while Miller finished with 10 points. Thomas came off the bench to chip in six points and seven rebounds, while Mitchell had a balanced game with eight points, five boards, three steals, two assists and one block.

Richburg finished with 17 in the second half to lead all scorers with 19 in the game. She added 12 rebounds for a double-double, and three blocks. Chevena Pickard had nine points and seven assists, but also turned the ball over seven times.

The Captains biggest edge came off the bench, getting 21 points from reserves compared to the Pride's non-starters. CNU outscored Greensboro, 23-12, off of turnovers.

A quick turnaround will see the Captains face off against Methodist University on Saturday, January 5 at 2:00 pm.  The game is the front end of a doubleheader with the men's teams; live stats and video are available at CNUsports.com.
