UW-Superior tramples Trinity Christian

More news about: UW-Superior

The Yellowjacket women's basketball team entered the holiday break on fire, and the two-week hiatus did little to extinguish the flames.  In their first game back, the 2012-13 Yellowjackets etched their names into the history books, employing a balanced offense and suffocating defense on their way to a convincing 60-38 win over Trinity Christian College in their first game at the Alverno College Tournament.

With the win, the Yellowjackets have now won five consecutive games, tying the school record set just last season.

The Yellowjackets took the lead when Connie Urmanski (Edgar, Wis./Edgar) hit a jumper 48 seconds into the game, and they would not relinquish the advantage.  Kailee McDonald (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) made a layup with 6:40 remaining in the half to push the lead to ten points and a few minutes later, Britnee Blake (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) knocked down a pair of free throws to make the advantage 19, the high mark of the first half.  The Yellowjackets would close out the first half with a 14-point lead, 31-17.

Hillary Peterson (Sturgeon Lake, Minn./Moose Lake) nailed a jumper to get the scoring started in the second half and make it a 15-point game.  Urmanski and Sally Linzmeier (Valders, Wis./Valders) combined for seven points over a two-minute stretch to increase the lead to 17 points.  The edge finally hit 20 points when Allyssa Lindberg (Marquette, Mich./Marquette) made a layup and followed it with a free throw with 12:44 to play, making the score 46-25.

With under three minutes to play Molly Atherton (Blaine, Minn./Blaine) hit a jumper to make the lead 28 points, the largest margin in the game.  A pair of TCC three pointers late in the game closed the gap to 22, making the final score 60-38.

Offensively, 14 different Yellowjackets scored at least one point, led by Linzmeier with 13.  She was the only Yellowjacket in double figures.  Urmanski was next with nine points, while Lindberg scored seven points off the bench.  Peterson led the Yellowjackets with five rebounds and Deandra Vavra (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti), returning from injury, led with four assists.

On defense Peterson had the only block of the game for the Yellowjackets.  As a team the Yellowjackets had 18 steals, led by Dana Karlstad (Eleva, Wis./Eleva-Strum) with four and Kristen Nett (Green Bay, Wis./Bay Port) with three.

The Yellowjackets were within shouting distance of the school record for fewest points allowed.  The mark of 26 was accomplished twice, most recently on February 11, 1977 against UW-Stout.  The point total was the lowest since the Yellowjackets also gave up 38 to Crown College on November 16, 2007.

Milestone Update: With her nine points Urmanski has now moved into eighth place on the all-time scoring list, passing Ann DeBruin (1982-87).  She is now just 12 points away from 1,000 points for her career and 13 points from moving into seventh place on the all-time scoring list.  Currently, Stephanie Janigo (2001-05) sits seventh with 1,001 points.

The Yellowjackets (9-2, 3-1 WIAC) will go for the record-setting win on Sunday, December 30 when they take on the hosts from Alverno College.  Game time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
