Maryville Uses Second Half Charge to Defeat Lady Scots

MARYVILLE, Tenn. -- Three Covenant players scored in double figures, but 30 turnovers and a second half charge by Maryville lifted the host Scots to an 86-67 victory over the Covenant Lady Scots on Friday night.

The loss snaps a two-game winning streak for Covenant as the Lady Scots are now 5-2 on the season. Maryville improves to 4-1 on the year.

Kiaira Cooper just missed a double-double as she led Covenant with 18 points and nine rebounds. Haley Soles drained five 3-pointers and totals 17 points, while Jessie Balnkenship had 15 points and five rebounds. Morgan Woodward added nine points and four assists.

Janell Menard and Mackenzie Puckett each had 20 points for Maryville. Menard had a productive game all-around as she had five rebounds, five steals, and four assists. Kiera Payne chipped in a dozen points in the win.

Covenant trailed for the better part of the game, but found themselves down just 37-32 at halftime. The Lady Scots were behind as many as 12 points in the first half, but went on a 16-3 scoring run that was capped by a Woodward free-throw to give Covenant a brief 28-27 lead.

In the second half, the Maryville defensive pressure was too much for Covenant. Maryville would outscore the Lady Scots 40-35 in the period and led by as many as 28 points late in the game.

Maryville converted 30 Covenant turnovers into 38 points. Covenant shot the ball well connecting on 47.8 percent (22-46) from the floor and 5-of-10 from behind the 3-point line. Covenant also held a 38-30 rebounding advantage. Maryville made 45.3 percent (34-75) of its shots, but just 5-of-17 from 3-point territory.

Covenant will have a quick turnaround as they will travel to Emory, Va., for Saturday's game against Emory & Henry College. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
