Warhawks Top Blue Devils in WIAC Opener

Sophomore forward Brea Boomer used three layups in the first 3:12 of the game to give the Blue Devils a 6-2 lead in the first half. Stout extended their lead to nine points, 16-7, with 13:51 remaining. Facing an eight point deficit with 10:55 left, the Warhawks battled back with a 7-0 run to come to within one, 21-20, with just over half the time remaining in the first twenty minutes.

Less than two minutes later, UW-W took its first lead 24-23 on a jumper by junior guard Katie Burton at 8:21. UW-S tied it up, then took the lead and the Warhawks took their turn knotting the score at 26-26 with 5:28 left in the half. Whitewater put together another seven point run to take a 33-26 lead with 3:52 on the clock. Stout registered a field goal with 2:52 left to make the score 33-29 but the Warhawk defense held them scoreless for the remainder of the half. UW-W added five points in the final minutes to head into the lockerroom with a 38-31 advantage.

Both teams shot 48% from the field in the first half with UW-W making 14 of their 29 attempts and Stout going 12-25. The Blue Devils posted two more three-pointers but Whitewater had the advantage from the free throw line, making 8 of 10 to 3-6 for Stout, and in rebounds with 17 to Stout's 12. The Warhawk defense forced 16 turnovers in the half.

UW-W senior guard Sam Quandt led all players in the first 20 minutes with 10 points on 4-5 shooting from the floor. Cortney Kumerow recorded six boards in the half for the Warhawks. Boomer led the Blue Devils with eight points after scoring six in the first 2:12 of the game.

With the exception of a free throw at 18:46, UW-W's defense held the Blue Devils scoreless until the 10:52 mark in the second half. Whitewater tacked on 14 points during Stout's scoring drought to extend their lead to 52-32 with 11:06 left in the game. The Warhawks increased the gap to 26 with 6:55 on the clock after freshman guard Abbie Reeves hit two free throws to make the score 62-36.

Whitewater fell into a bit of a drought, not scoring until the 3:28 mark when Kumerow broke the slump with a jumper to keep the lead at 20, 64-44. Stout came to within 14 points late in the game, but UW-W scored six points in the final two minutes while holding the Blue Devils to one free throw with 25 seconds left to end the scoring, 72-53.

Whitewater shot 45% from the field (28-62) while holding Stout to 17-49 (35%) from the floor. The Warhawks held a 43-26 rebounding advantage and forced 26 turnovers in the game.

Kumerow led all players with 18 points on 7-13 from the floor, registering a double-double with ten boards. Freshman forward Lisa Palmer and Quandt added ten points apiece for UW-W.

Senior forward Whitney Rowdon led Stout with 16 points and Boomer ended with 12.

The Warhawks will host UW-La Crosse in another WIAC match-up Wednesday, December 5. Tip-off in Kachel Gym in Williams Center is scheduled for 7:00.
