Henry Paces Montclair State as Red Hawks Breeze Past Rutgers-Newark, 67-36

Montclair, NJ – Junior guard Nicosia Henry (Bolingbrook, IL, Bolingbrook) posted a fine all-around game with 13 points, nine rebounds, four assists and three steals as Montclair State remained unbeaten with a 67-36 victory over Rutgers-Newark at the Panzer Athletic Center on Saturday.

Sophomore Melissa Tobie (Elizabeth, NJ, Roselle Catholic) added 12 points, seven rebounds, two blocks and three steals as Montclair State scored the first 11-points of the game in improving to 5-0 overall, 3-0 in the NJAC.

Sophomore forward Jade Howard (Sicklerville, NJ / St. Joseph's (Hammonton) had 11 points and nine rebounds for the Scarlet Raiders  (4-2), who dropped their first conference games of the year after opening up its league slate with two victories.

The Red Hawks burst out of the gate as sophomore guard Janitza Aquino (Kearny, NJ, Kearny) scored one layup four seconds into the contest. Henry put back as missed attempt and Aquino sank a free throw as MSU led 5-0 with 18:20 left. Henry scored again and Tobie followed with a layup before Taylor Jeffers (Franklin Township, NJ, Franklin) connected twice from the line MSU led 11-0 with 17:25 to go in the opening half.

Rutgers-Newark would trim the lead back to 16-9 by Tobie drained a three-pointer as Montclair scored seven of the next nine points to take a 23-11 advantage with 5:59 remaining.

MSU led 38-31 at the break.

Henry had 11 of her points in the first half as Montclair State turned 17 Rutgers-Newark turnovers into 16 points. The Red Hawks also dominated the glass with 16 offensive rebounds which produced 21 second-chance points.

The Scarlet Raiders opened the scoring in the second half on a layup by Palmer to make the score 38-21 however that would as close as they would get the rest of the way as Jeffers ignited a 13-0 run as Montclair State widened its lead to 51-23 with 15:32 left.

Jeffers finished with nine points and added three rebounds while freshman Shalette Brown (Somerset, NJ, Franklin Township) collected eight points, seven rebounds and six steals. Montclair outrebounded Rutgers-Newark 46-27, including a 26-7 advantage on the offensive glass.

Junior forward Jewell Palmer (Port Reading, NJ / Woodbridge) had nine points and four rebounds for the Scarlet Raiders, who finished the game shooting 32 percent (12-of-38) from the field, including 5-of-23 in the second half.  Rutgers-Newark committed 32 turnovers.

Montclair State is back in action on Wednesday, December 5 when they host Ramapo at 6:00 pm.
