Golden Bears Victorious in Sloppy Game against Gordon in CCC Opener

Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Freshman Chelsea Vujs registered a double-double of 10 points and a career-high 15 rebounds and senior tri-captains Emily Savino and Shelby Van Huysen added 14 and 10 points apiece, helping the Western New England University women's basketball team to a 50-26 Commonwealth Coast Conference victory Wednesday over visiting Gordon College at the Alumni Healthful Living Center field house. The Golden Bears improve to 3-1 while the Fighting Scots drop to 2-2 after the CCC opener for both squads.

Brooke Kratche led Gordon with eight points and nine rebounds while Lauren Kranyak added seven points, six rebounds and eight steals.

Savino and Vujs also chipped in four steals apiece and senior Elena Radzikowski contributed eight points, seven rebounds, a blocked shot and three steals.

Both teams struggled offensively, combining for 42 turnovers. Gordon shot 18.4 percent on 9 of 49 field goal attempts, and Western New England managed a 34.6 clip (18-52). The Fighting Scots, who trailed 23-8 at halftime, didn't reach double-digits until Kranyak hit a pair of free throws at the 17:44 mark of the second half.

Western New England, which held an opponent to its lowest point production since the 2000-01 season, led wire-to-wire.
