Pioneers top Spalding behind Coffman's 29

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Transylvania rebounded from a first-half deficit Tuesday, using an early run in the second half to take a 77-70 win over Spalding in women's collegiate basketball action.

The Pioneers improve to 2-1 on the season while the Golden Eagles are 2-1.

Transy trailed Spalding 32-31 at haltime before using an early 6-0 run to regain the lead for good. Spalding's largest lead was three late in the first half.

Transy sophomore Nicole Coffman led three Pioneers in double figures with 29 points, setting a career high for the second game in a row. Katelyn Smith added 16 points and six rebounds while sophomore Alex McKenzie came up with 11 points, four rebounds and a pair of assists. Madisen Webb contributed eight points, seven assists and two steals.

There were seven ties and three lead changes in the contest. Transy broke a 42-42 tie on a three by Coffman with just over 13 minutes to play and never trailed again. The Pioneers led by at many as 12, 56-44, on a Coffman three with nine minutes to go.

Coffman was nine of 13 from the field, including five of six from three-point range, to better her previous career high by one point. She also had three rebounds and canned six of eight free throws.

Transy hit 53 percent of its shots from the field, including five of eight from behind the arc. The Pioneers connected on 24 of 27 free throws and battled the Eagles to a 28-28 standoff on the boards.

Kerstin Hayes had 22 points to lead Spalding and Kelly Harrod added 15 points and six rebounds. Spalding hit 41.5 percent of its field goal attempts and was just six of 21 behind the arc. Spalding also had 17 turnovers to 13 for the visitors.

The Pioneers are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Anderson for their Heartland Conference season opener. Transy takes on the Ravens at 2 p.m.
