Women's Basketball Loses to St. John Fisher in Opening Round of Tournament

ROCHESTER, N.Y.— The John Jay women's basketball team was defeated by St. John Fisher College (Fisher) 71-55 on Saturday evening in the opening round of the Woodcliff Hotel and Spa Invitational hosted by Fisher.
 
The loss was the first of the season for John Jay, the Bloodhounds fall to 1-1. Fisher improves to 1-3 on the year. John Jay will now face Farmingdale State College in the consolation game at 12 p.m. on Sunday, while Fisher will play for the championship against Union College. Union beat Farmingdale State 48-45 in Saturday's other game.
 
The Bloodhounds were led by Danielle Eagan with 15 points. She shot 4-for-7 from the field and 3-for-6 from three point range. Fellow teammates Victoria Story and Simone Victor also notched double figures in scoring. Story had 10, while Victor came off the bench and added 11.
 
The host Cardinals got off to a fast start over the Bloodhounds, opening the game on a 20-2 run less than nine minutes into the contest.
 
But the game was far from over as John Jay scratched its way back into the contest and dwindled Fisher's big lead down to as little as five as the Bloodhounds trailed 32-27 with 3:44 remaining.
 
But the Cardinals ended the first half on a 9-0 run to lead 41-27 at halftime.
 
Fisher maintained a double digit lead the entire second half en route to the win. Fisher led by as much as 21 in the final stanza and the Bloodhounds got to within as little as 13 but no closer.
 
The Cardinals were led by Camaryn Buckner with 21 points and eight rebounds. She connected on nine for 11 from the field. Her teammate Mary Kate Cusack added 14 points and eight rebounds.
