Mariners, Bears Advance to Classic Final

Maine Maritime received double-doubles from Rebekah Campbell and Leah Jackson to knock off Maine-Fort Kent, 67-60, in the first round of the Mariner Classic Friday night at Smith Gymnasium. The Mariners (1-0) advanced to Saturday's 3 p.m. championship game opposite Bridgewater State, a 61-60 winner over Colby, while the Bengals (0-1) will play the Mulesin the 1 p.m. consolation game.

Maine-Fort Kent jumped out to a 13-6 lead, with seven points from Jennifer Colopitts and six by Ericka Christensen, early in the first half. The Mariners answered with an 8-1 scoring run to even the game at 14-14 with 7:28 left in the first half. Alexis Bennett scored four points in the run for MMA while Campbell and Jackson both scored two. A jumper from Casey Everest gave MMA its largest lead, 26-19, with 4:24 left before the half before the Mariners eventually took a 31-25 halftime lead.

MMA opened the second half with eight unanswered to lead 39-25. The Bengals answered with a three from by Brooke Harris, two layups by Christensen and a bucket from Colopitts to cut their deficit to 39-34 with 14:38 left in the game. Courtney DuFour's trey, followed by Jackson's layup, put the Mariners ahead by 10, 55-45, at 7:45 and MMA never the trailed by more than six the rest of the contest.

Jackson finished with a game-high 14 rebounds and added a team-high 13 points for the Mariners. Campbell had 12 points and 10 boards while Bennett reached double figures for MMA with 11 points.

Christensen also recorded a double-double for MFK with game-high 17 points and team-high 13 boards. Colopitts added 14 and Brooke Harris finished with 11.

Michaela Cosby's free throws at 3:04 lifted Bridgewater State to a 61-60 win over Colby in the second game of the Mariner Classic.

Cosby finished with a game-high 24 points and added a team-best 11 rebounds. Megan Boutilette added 17 points and 10 boards for the Bears and Colleen Hanscom had 11 points.

Desi Smith led the Mules with 23 points and Diana Manduca added 10 points.

Colby, which trailed 35-20 at the break, used a 14-3 scoring run in the second half to get within four, 49-45, on a pair of Smith free throws. Manduca knocked in two free throws at 3:16 to give Colby a 60-59 lead before Cosby's free throws.

Bridgewater built a 27-18 lead in the first half and went into the locker room with a 15 points lead. Scores by Jenna Williamson, Cosby, Elisha Homich and Colleen Hanscom for the Bears finished off an 8-2 scoring run to end the first.
