Oswego State Rides Early Lead to Max Ziel Tournament Title

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State women's basketball team (2-0) raced out to an 18-3 lead over D'Youville (1-1), and led from start to finish in a 66-39 win to capture its third straight Max Ziel Tournament Championship.

Meagan Stover (Sr., Lake George, N.Y.) scored seven of the Lakers' first 18 points, and finished with 11 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals. She was named tournament MVP, as she racked up her first career double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds in the previous game.

Evelyn Josbena (Sr., Solvay, N.Y.) tallied and block and scored on a put-back layup to cap off the half for the Lakers, who led 30-11 at the break. Josbena also received All-Tournament honors, as she pitched in 11 points, eight rebounds and seven steals.

Eight straight points early in the second half from Lauren Nunziato (Jr., West Sand Lake, N.Y.) set the tone for the second half, giving Oswego State a 22-point lead.

The Lakers secured the tournament triumph on the defensive end, recording 15 steals and five blocks while only allowing 39 points. Oswego State allowed just 77 total points all weekend, while scoring 135 points of its own.

Shannon Dougherty and Bridget Andrews led the Spartans with 12 points each, and Dougherty was named to the All-Tournament Team.

The Lakers travel to Hamilton for their next contest, as they face the Continentals at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
