Oswego State Advances to Max Ziel Championship

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State women's basketball team (1-0) hit ten three-pointers to pull away from SUNYIT (0-1) early in a 69-38 victory on Friday night to advance to the championship game of the Max Ziel Tournament.

Senior captain Meagan Stover (Lake George, N.Y.) led the Lakers with 16 points on 7-for-12 shooting, while also snagging 11 rebounds to register a double-double. She was one of four Lakers to record double-digit points in the contest.

In the early going, it was fellow captain Kari Kipper (Sr., Loudonville, N.Y.) who had the hot hand. After the teams traded baskets to start, Kipper rattled off 11 points during a 22-8 run to give Oswego State a 24-10 lead.

Senior transfer Evelyn Josbena (Solvay, N.Y.) put in a layup late in the half to give the Lakers a 41-22 lead heading into the break.

Stover helped maintain the lead by scoring eight of the first nine points of the second stanza for the Lakers. Junior Lauren Nunziato (West Sand Lake, N.Y.) and freshman Tayler Sorell (Hannibal, N.Y.) took over from there, each hitting two three-pointers to stretch the lead to 33 points.

Oswego State was also solid defensively, registering eight steals and three blocks. The Lakers also held the Wildcats to 29 percent shooting and 38 points.

Lauren Knowles led the Wildcats with 14 points, while also grabbing nine boards.

SUNYIT matches up with Cobleskill at noon Saturday in the consolation game. Oswego State plays for the championship at 4 p.m. against D'Youville.
