Moravian Opens the 2012-13 Season with a 75-67 Victory Over Ursinus

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Moravian College women's basketball team defeated Ursinus College, 75-67, Thursday night. Sophomore forward Alexis Wright netted her seventh career double-double after putting up 19 points and 15 rebounds.

The Bears recorded the first basket of the game after a layup from freshman guard Alyssa Polimeni. Junior forward Laura Jordan would get the first basket f or the Greyhounds one minute in. Ursinus took a 4-2 lead two minutes in, but junior guard Danielle Brogan pushed Moravian up by one with a three-pointer. Back-to-back buckets from freshmen guards Alesha Marcks and Karine Polgar would put Moravian up 13-11 seven minutes into the game.

The Bears then went on an 11-2 run over the next four minutes to take a 22-15 advantage at the 8:49 mark in the first half. The Greyhounds battled back with points from Wright, Jordan, junior guard Katie O'Rourke to put the Hounds up 29-28 after a 14-6 run of their own. A free throw from Polgar and a layup from O'Rourke ended the first half as Moravian held a 32-29 lead.

O'Rourke led the way with nine points, four rebounds and two assists while junior guard Diamond Lewis tallied up 13 points and two assists for the Bears. Moravian shot 34.3 percent from the field while Ursinus shot 33.3 percent in the first half. The Hounds held a 26-23 rebounding edge after 20 minutes of play.

Freshman forward Croline Shimrock for Ursinus tallied the first basket of the second half, but Wright answered right back with a layup of her own. Shimrock then hit a deep three-pointer to knot the contest at 34 two minutes into the half. The Greyhounds then went on a 7-0 run that ended with a free throw from senior guard Amanda Kreuder to extend Moravian's lead to 44-36 with 15 minutes remaining the contest.

Wright and Kreuder went 4-for-4 in the free throw department with 11:37 to play in the contest to push the Greyhounds lead to 55-42. With 9:58 remaining in the game, Brogan hit a deep jumper extend the Hounds lead to 57-52. Kreuder then extended the Greyhounds lead to 20 points at 62-42 with 8:33 left in the second half before freshman forward Tori Steinberg ended Moravian's run with a three-pointer. Moravian held its lead down the stretch while defeating the Bears 75-67.

O'Rourke finished with 14 points, nine rebounds, three steals and two assists while Brogan put up 11 points. Jordan had ten points and five boards while Kreuder tallied ten points, four steals, three assists and three rebounds. Polgar had seven assists, six rebounds five steals and three points while Marcks totaled six points and three rebounds.

Lewis put up a game-high 21 points to go with her five assists while Shimrock recorded a double-double off of 13 points and ten rebounds. Polimeni added 13 points while Steinberg finished with ten points.

Moravian shot 40.6 percent from the field while Ursinus shot 37.1 percent from the field. The Greyhounds out-rebounded the Bears 53 to 43 while turning over the ball four less times than Ursinus.

Moravian returns to the court on Saturday, November 17th as they travel to the Terry Greene Memorial Tournament. The Greyhounds will take on Elizabethtown College at 1 p.m.
