The Lakeland College women's basketball team suffered its first loss in four weeks, a 60-53 setback against the Milwaukee School of Engineering in Milwaukee, Wis.
The Muskies (18-7) tied the game three times, but never led in the contest. Lakeland just couldn't get the big shot it needed, snapping their nine game win streak.
In the first half, the Raiders (16-9) used a 13-4 run to jump out to their largest lead of the game, a nine-point, 15-6, advantage. Lakeland used a 10-3 run of their own, bringing the Muskies to within two points, 18-16, with 7:08 left in the half. Lakeland would tie the game twice, 24-24 and 29-29, before the Raiders sank a 3-point shot four seconds before halftime, giving them a 32-29 lead.
Lakeland shot well in the half, shooting 40 percent (10-for-25) from the field, 28.6 percent (2-for-7) from the 3-point line and 7-for-12 from the free throw line. The Muskies were led by junior Becky Mayo (Gladstone, Mich.) and sophomore Jessica Genke (Kiel, Wis.) who each scored six points and grabbed four rebounds. 
The Muskies held MSOE in check as the Raiders shot 38.5 percent (10-for-26) from the floor, 30 percent (3-for-10) from the 3-point line and 9-for-13 from the charity stripe. Lakeland was outrebounded, 20-17, in the half and the Muskies committed 10 turnover which led to nine MSOE points.
In the second half, the Raiders stretched their lead to eight points, however, the Muskies fought back. The teams would battle back and forth for much of the half, with Lakeland cutting the lead to one, 47-46, with 7:38 to play. MSOE wasn't ready to give in as the Raiders went on a 9-3 run to stretch the lead back to seven points, 56-49, with 2:12 left in the game. MSOE hit four of the final seven free throws to seal the victory.
The Lakeland offense couldn't find a rhythm in the second half as the Muskies shot just 30 percent (9-for-30) from the field, 12.5 percent (1-for-8) from behind the arc and 83.3 percent (5-for-6) from the free throw line. Genke and fellow sophomore Taylor Jandrin (Forestville, Wis.) each scored five points in the half, while Genke grabbed six boards.
The Muskies defense was also lacking in the second half, as MSOE shot 45.5 percent (10-for-22) from the floor, 16.7 percent (1-for-6) from the 3-point line and 63.6 percent (7-for-11) from the charity stripe. Again the Muskies were outrebounded, 19-17, and committed 10 turnovers which led to seven MSOE points.
Genke finished with her seventh double-double of the season, scoring 11 points and tallying 10 rebounds. Senior Alyssa Schuttenhelm (Waterford, Wis.) added nine points.
With the loss, Lakeland receives the No. 4 seed in the Northern Athletics Conference Tournament and will host the No. 5 seed, Concordia University Wisconsin. The quarterfinal contest will take place on Wednesday, Feb. 22, at 7 p.m.
