Iacono's Career High Pushes Case Past #11 Rochester

CLEVELAND - Evy Iacono hit an eight footer off the right baseline with nine seconds to play as Case Western Reserve upended the University of Rochester, 58-57, in women's basketball at Horsburgh Gymnasium.

Laney Ming threw a court-length pass to Maddie Korber off the inbounds. Korber was double-teammed and sent a pass out to Kristyn Wright on the wing. Her three-pointer was long off the rim and the buzzer sounded as the ball hit the floor.

It was the first victory for the Spartans over the Yellowjackets after 11 consecutive Rochester wins. Case is 6-6 in the University Athletic Association, 13-10 overall. Rochester is 19-4 overall, 8-4 in the UAA. The Yellowjackets entered the game ranked 11th nationally by D3hoops.com and 12th by the WBCA.

The lead switched hands three times in the last 51 secondsd. Rochester led, 55-52, on a layup and free throw by Loren Wagner with 3:40 to go. Erica Iafelice made a layup 16 seconds later, bringing the Spartans within 55-54. Brooke Orcott put Case on top, 56-55, when she sank both ends of a one-and-one with :51 left.

Iacono fouled Ming on a baseline drive and Ming made two free throws for a 57-56 Rochester lead with 29.5 seconds remaining.

Wagner led Rochester with 16 points and seven rebounds. Jodie Luther had 12 points and seven rebounds. Ming finished with eight points and four assists. Paige Aleski scored six points.

In the first half, the Yellowjackets used a 10-0 run to build a 22-18 lead with 5:59 left. Aleski's three-point goal gave Rochester a 25-24 lead with 2:52 remaining. Case went on an 8-0 run - four points by Iacono - to take a 32-25 lead at halftime. The lead peaked at 12, 37-25, at 18:35 of the seconbd half.

Case was still up 11, 41-30, on two Iacono free throws four minutes into the second half. Rochester went on a 20-6 run over the next nine minutes and led, 50-47, with 7:01 to play.

Rochester fell into a third-place tie with Emory which defeated Carnegie Mellon. Chicago clinched the UAA title and Pool A (automatic) bid to the tournament with a 57-42 win at NYU. The Maroons are 12-0 in the league, 23-0 overall. Washington is second at 9-3. The Bears downed Brandeis, 57-33.

On Sunday, Rochester plays at Carnegie Mellon. Case hosts Emory, Chicago visits Brandeis, and Washington is at NYU.
