Brittany Cohen Ties Career High With 28 Points in Cortland's 76-66 Win vs. Fredonia

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Senior Brittany Cohen (Fayetteville/Jamesville-DeWitt) scored 28 points, matching her career high, and handed out seven assists as Cortland defeated Fredonia, 76-66, in a SUNYAC matchup.

Cortland (15-9, 10-7 SUNYAC) remains tied with Geneseo for fourth place in the conference standings with one game remaining. If Cortland defeats league leader Buffalo State on Saturday afternoon, the Red Dragons will earn the fourth seed and will host Geneseo in the conference quarterfinals on Tuesday, Feb. 21. If Cortland loses to Buffalo State, Geneseo will host Cortland in the quarterfinals.

Cohen made 6-of-9 shots from the field with two three-pointers and hit 14-of-16 free throws. She scored 20 points in the second half, including 13 points in the final five minutes to help the Red Dragons pull away.

Sophomore Megan Touhey (Maine/Maine-Endwell) finished with 11 points, senior Micki Volpini (Newfield) scored eight points and freshman Brittany Rando (Owego/Owego Free Academy) added seven points. Seniors Molly Byrne (Syracuse/Bishop Ludden) and Ally Biordi (Beacon) led the team with five rebounds each.

Becky Hebert (Hilton) led Fredonia (10-13, 6-13 SUNYAC) with 24 points. Nicole Calbi (Olean) finished with 14 points and three assists and Jaimie Warren (Lakeview/Frontier Central) had nine rebounds. The Blue Devils will finish somewhere between sixth and eighth place in the final standings depending on their game Saturday at Oswego plus other outcomes.

Cortland led 32-31 at halftime, and neither team led by more than four points the first 12 minutes of the second half. Rando's three-pointer with 7:40 left gave the Red Dragons a 54-49 lead. Hebert eventually brought Fredonia within four at 57-53 on two foul shots with 4:57 left.

Cohen hit two foul shots with 4:32 remaining, followed by layups at the 3:19 and 2:40 marks to put Cortland up by 10. The guests fought back to within six at 72-66 on a Hebert three-pointer with 35 seconds left, but Rando sank two foul shots with 33 seconds remaining. Calbi quickly answered with a layup with 28 seconds left, but Cohen sealed the win by making her last four foul shots.
