Medaille Women Dominant in Win Over D'Youville

More news about: Medaille

BUFFALO, NY - It was clear from the opening tip that the Medaille women's basketball team was going to make life difficult for crosstown rival D'Youville College.  The Lady Mavs jumped out to a double digit lead in the games opening minutes and never looked back, en route to the convincing win.

In the early stage Medaille was knocking down shots from all over the floor and the Spartans had no answer on the defensive end.  That coupled with a stifling Medaille defense resulted in a (51-17) halftime score.  The Lady Mavs held D'Youville scoreless for a stretch of (9:51) seconds in the opening half, that streak was broken when the Spartans drained a three pointer with twelve seconds remaining in the half.

Leading the way for Medaille was Mary Bongiovanni who came off the bench to tally a game high (16) points on (7 of 12) shooting, while also pulling down five rebounds.  A trio of Lady Mavs each notched a dozen points as Tanisha Travis, Joelle Pollak, and Emily Brophy all accomplished that feat.

Reserve Morgan Howe was impressive in her minutes on the floor as she posted the games only double/double with an (11) point, (13) rebound effort.  The Lady Mav offense was directed by Meghan Dougherty who dished out a game best six assists, matching the same number served up by her sister Shannon who was the Spartans most consistent player on the night.

The Lady Mavs were completely dominant in the win as they outrebounded D'Youville (52-29) which included an astonishing (26) offensive boards.  The Lady Mavs assisted on (27 of 37) made field goals, outscored D'Youville (46-20) in the paint, tallied (38) points off turnovers (to just (8) by the Spartans, bested the visitors in second chance points (19-1) and scored (20) fast break points (D'Youville scored none).

The win is the eleventh straight for Medaille and it pushes their overall record to (20-4) and they move to (15-2) in AMCC play.  Tonight's win marks the seventh time in the past eight seasons that the Lady Mavs have reached the (20) win plateau.  They will host La Roche College on Saturday (2/18) at 3:00pm on "Senior Day" in the Sullivan Center.  A win in that game would assure Medaille of the #2 seed in the AMCC Tournament and a first round bye.
