Kean Women Clinch Home Court in NJAC Playoffs; Defeat Richard Stockton

UNION, N.J. (2/15/12) – Senior Danielle McFadden scored a career-high 19 points and added 14 rebounds to lead the Kean University women's basketball team to a 53-47 win over Richard Stockton College in the New Jersey Athletic Conference regular season finale on Wednesday evening.

McFadden hit 7-of-9 shots from the floor and grabbed five offensive boards en-route to the double-double for the #23 Cougars (21-4, 12-1 NJAC), who clinched home-court advantage throughout the NJAC playoffs.

Sophomore forward Lauren Alwan also had a double-double for the Ospreys (14-11, 5-8 NJAC).

The Ospreys opened up the game with a 7-1 lead, before the Cougars answered with seven straight points to tie the game at 8-8 on the three-pointer by junior Erika Jones at the 14:41 mark.  The Cougars would take an 11-10 lead on a three-point play by McFadden, however Richard Stockton scored the game's next 12 points to open up a 22-11 lead after a three-point play by junior Che'Na Thompson with seven minutes remaining.

Kean responded with a 12-1 run to tie the game at 23-23, as McFadden opened the run with a layup, before her steal and lay-up tied the game at 23-23 with 4:32 left.  The two teams battled back and forth in the final minutes of the opening half, as Kean took the 30-29 lead into halftime.   

McFadden had 11 points and seven rebounds in the first half, while Alwan had 13 points, five rebounds and five steals for Richard Stockton.

The Cougars extended the lead to 34-29, as McFadden opened the second half with back-to-back layups.  Richard Stockton scored five straight points to tie the game at 34-34 and again at 36-36, however Kean would extend the lead to as many as nine points on a pair of occasions in the final six minutes. 

The Ospreys used a 7-1 run to pull to within three points following a pair of free throws by senior Aliyah Nelson with 30 seconds remaining, however that would be as close as Kean would allow the Ospreys, as Jones had a three-point play and sophomore Shay Collins hit 1-of-2 free throws to seal the victory.

McFadden added four assists, four steals and two blocks, while Jones chipped in with 10 points, eight rebounds and four steals. 

For the Ospreys, freshman guard Brittany Muniz finished with 10 points and seven rebounds.

Kean hosts a semifinal round game next Tuesday, February 21, at 7 p.m.
