Second-Half Surge Lifts Buffalo State Over Geneseo, 64-56

BUFFALO, NY— Bianca Smiley (Amherst/Sweet Home) posted her eighth double-double of the season with 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead Buffalo State (19-2/12-2) to a 64-56 victory over visiting Geneseo (12-9/7-7) in a SUNYAC game tonight at the Sports Arena.

Staci McElroy (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs) added 13 points and eight boards.  Kala Crawford (Middle Falls/Saratoga Springs) had nine points, including five late free throws, and dished out five assists, while Barb Kiliszek (Depew/Lancaster) added seven points and nine rebounds.

 Shannon McGinnis (Walworth/Gananda) paced Geneseo with 21 points and 11 boards, and Bri Dunton (Middlesex/Marcus Whitman) had nine points and six assists.

Geneseo scored the first seven points of the game, but Buffalo State answered quickly to claim an 18-13 lead.  The Knights battled back and took the lead again before the teams went into the intermission knotted at 26-26.  The Bengals never trailed in the second half, building a 50-38 advantage before hitting a handful of free throws in the closing minute to preserve the win.

After being outrebounded by a 24-17 margin in the first half, the Bengals took over on the boards in the final 20 minutes with a 25-17 edge.  Buffalo State outscored Geneseo in the paint, 42-28, for the game and forced 14 Knights' turnovers while committing just seven.

Buffalo State wore pink uniforms as part of the WBCA 'Play 4 Kay' initiative to raise breast cancer awareness.

Buffalo State will host Brockport tomorrow at 2 p.m.
