More news about: UW-River Falls

Tiffany Gregorich (Altoona, WI, Altoona) scored a layup with 15 seconds remaining and Alise Holst's (Plainview, MN, Plainview-Elgin-Millville) steal with two seconds remaining secured a 60-59 upset victory for the women's basketball team over UW-Eau Claire.

Eau Claire came into the game with a 10-2 WIAC record, but the Falcons were right on their heels, coming in at 8-3.  Earlier this year, the Blugolds had beaten the Falcons 63-57 at the Karges Center.

Despite trailing 33-25 at halftime, the Falcons used a resurgent second half to leave UWEC stunned.  With 10:46 to go in the game, the Falcons went on an 11-0 run to go up by five, their largest lead of the night.

After that, the teams traded baskets and went back and forth until the closing seconds when UWRF would take a late and final lead.

T. Gregorich led all players with 21 points.  She added four steals and four assists for a complete-game performance, which included the eventual game-winning layup.

Maranda Dohrn (Lake City, MN, Lake City) led the defensive charge, while pulling down a game-high 11 rebounds.  River Falls out-rebounded Eau Claire 38-32.

Holst also was key on both ends of the floor.  She had four steals, including the big one to seal the one-point victory.  She also poured in 14 points and had seven boards.

UWRF was crafty to sneak the victory away from Eau Claire.  The Falcons recorded a season-high 16 steals throughout the game.  UWEC had a mere seven.

The Falcons were also better at protecting the basketball.  As a team, UWRF forced 19 Blugold turnovers, while committing only 13 of their own.

The Blugolds did shoot better from the field at 49.1 percent.  UWRF shot 38.1 percent.  However, the Falcons made up for it from behind the arc as they connected on 4-11 for 36 percent.  UWEC was 3-13 for 23.1 percent.

With the victory, the Falcons improve to 17-4 overall and 9-3 in the WIAC.  The Blugolds fall to 17-4.  They are now 10-3 in the WIAC.  The Falcons are now 30-51 all time against Eau Claire.

Up next for the Falcons is an away contest at UW-Superior.  Action is set to get underway at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 8.

Earlier this year, the Falcons defeated Superior 65-44 at the Karges Center.

UWRF is 52-19 all time against the Yellowjackets.
