First Half Run Seals Win for CMS

CLAREMONT, Calif. -- The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball put any hopes of a Caltech upset bid to rest early in there 69-29 win on Thursday evening in a SCIAC contest at Ducey Gym.

During the first meeting between the two schools in early January, Caltech held a six-point halftime lead before the Athenas pulled away in the second half. On Thursday night, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps scored the game's first eight points and never trailed in claiming the win.

A valient Caltech (0-20, 0-9 SCIAC) effort kept their deficit at single digits for a majority of the first half before the home team started to pull away. With the Athenas holding a 14-8 lead just past the halfway point in the opening stanza, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (13-7, 7-2 SCIAC) finished the final 9:16 on a 21-6 run in taking a 35-14 lead at intermission.

The Athenas wouldn't let the visitors get any closer than 23 points in the second half in staying among the conference leaders in the standings.

Teri Juarez had a team best eight points to go along with her game high 11 rebounds. Bridget Connor contributed a nine-rebound, six-evening.

Shelby Barthold came off the bench for the Athenas to score a game high 10 points.

Caltech hosts SCIAC leader Occidental on Saturday evening at 5:00 p.m.
