MADISON, N.J. (January 21, 2012) – The Rangers could not withstand a late Catholic (13-5, 5-2 Landmark) push and lost, 66-50  to the visiting Cardinals in Baldwin Gym this afternoon. The loss moves the Rangers to 6-11 on the season and 2-5 in Landmark Conference play.

Senior Danielle Barber (Cape May Court House, N.J./Middle Twp.) scored a team-high 17 points and dished out five assists to lead the Drew offense. Classmate Victoria Ault (Middletown, N.J/Mater Dei) followed up her record seeking Friday night with 13 points and six rebounds.

The balanced Cardinal offense was led by Katarina Owunna who missed only three shots from the floor, scoring a game-high 21 points. She was a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line and led both squads with 13 rebounds. The combination of Kelli Josephsen and Jenny McGann accounted for 25 points and four rebounds.

As they have done with Landmark opponents all season, the Rangers kept within striking distance for the majority of the contest. Facing a 10-point deficit in the early going the Rangers roared back, narrowing the first half Cardinal lead to just one at the break. Ault and Barber were responsible for 22 of the Rangers 24 first half points.

Falling behind again early in the first half, the Rangers trailed 39-29 with 14:18 left in the game. Another comeback was in store as Barber and Whitney Mackay (Suffield, Conn./Berkshire) hit 3-pointers while Logan Cavanaugh (Rutland, Vt./Burr & Burton Academy) converted a layup to narrow the game to two points with 13:12 to go.

Catholic used one final surge to end the Rangers hope for their third-straight victory. A pair of layups by Josephsen and another from McGann worked the lead up to eight points with nine minutes left, making the score 45-37.

The home team could not put another run together to keep up with the fast paced Cardinals as they pulled away down the stretch. Catholic negated any notion of a comeback in the closing minutes, going 11-of-12 from the free throw line.

The Rangers will be back in action on Tuesday night when they welcome in the D3hoops.com number nine team in the country to Baldwin Gym. Tip is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
