FREDONIA, N.Y. – Four different Hawks had nine or more rebounds, as the State University of New York at New Paltz women's basketball team (10-8, 8-4 SUNYAC) rode a 53-35 rebounding margin to a 61-47 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) win over SUNY Fredonia (8-9, 4-7 SUNYAC) at Steele Hall on Saturday afternoon.

New Paltz overcame 23-of-71 (32.4 percent) shooting from the floor and 10-of-19 shooting from the free-throw line in the winning effort. Fredonia, meanwhile, shot 16-of-44 (36.4 percent) from the field, and the Blue Devils turned the ball over 22 times compared to New Paltz's 15 giveaways.

Junior guard Maliqua Fisher (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) led the Hawks in scoring with a game-high 15 points, while senior forward Shanay Bradley (Bronx, N.Y./New Explorers) and senior guard Zoe Cohen (Brooklyn, N.Y./The Berkeley Carroll School) each reached double figures with 11 points apiece. Senior guard Caitlin Irwin (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) grabbed a career-high-tying 11 boards, while Fisher, Bradley and junior guard Kahsyrah Bryant (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) all brought down nine. Irwin dished out three assists, while sophomore forward Jeanette Scott (West Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) had a pair of blocks for the second game in a row.

For Fredonia, Becky Hebert led the way with 14 points, and Liz Wierbinski added 10. Nicole Calbi distributed a game-high four assists, while Wierbinski had three steals.

The Blue Devils led for the majority of the first 10 minutes of the game before New Paltz went on a 12-1 tear, and a layup by Bradley at 6:33 of the first half pushed the score to 22-15 in favor of the Hawks. Fredonia rebounded the ball well in the two-minute span following that made shot by Bradley, and Jenna Austin cut the deficit to one with 4:38 left in the half. The Hawks ended the stanza on a 6-0 run, and a three-pointer by Cohen right before the buzzer gave New Paltz a seven-point halftime lead.

Both teams traded baskets in the opening minutes of the second half, but New Paltz began to pull away midway through the period. The Hawks went on a 17-7 spurt from 13:45 of the second half to 6:44 of the second half, and a layup by Fisher gave New Paltz its largest lead of the contest (57-38). The Hawks also took a 19-point lead 1:04 prior to Fisher's bucket off a pair of made free throws by Bryant. New Paltz cruised down the stretch and kept Fredonia from mounting a rally.

New Paltz returns to the Hawk Center on Tuesday, Jan. 31, as it takes on SUNY Potsdam at 6 p.m. in a league contest.
