Double Overtime Heartbreaker

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa –Franklin & Marshall battled Ursinus for 50 minutes only to come away with a heart-breaking 58-54 loss in double-overtime. The loss was the first on the road for F&M this season as they fell to (9-4, 6-2 CC). The Bears improved to (6-7, 5-3 CC).

The Diplomats struck first, but quickly found themselves in a 10-8 hole halfway through the first half. The Bears went up eight points, 18-10, at 6:04 before the Diplomats went on a 9-0 run to take the lead, 19-18, at 3:38. Ursinus countered with an 8-2 run to take a 26-21 edge into the break.

F&M trailed 40-31 half way through the second half, but the Diplomats outscored the Bears 16-7 to tie the game at 47 a piece and send the game into overtime. Down the stretch, Megan Pauley, Emily Johnson, Liz Snyder, and Kristina McCarthy all made key lay-ups in the Diplomats come back. Alexa Barbush scored four points in the final two minutes of the game, including a lay-up with 23 ticks left to bring F&M within two. Pauley collected a defensive rebound with 16 ticks left before the Diplomats called a timeout to set up for the final shot. Allison Bauer made the best of the opportunity, making a jump shot with five seconds left to send the game into the first overtime.

Overtime was just as dramatic, as the Diplomats tried to carry over their momentum. F&M led for the majority of the first overtime, but the Bears battled their way back and hit a lay-up with 46 seconds left, to tie the game at 51 and send the contest into double overtime.

Lindsay Teuber sank a free throw to put the Bears up 52-51 just seconds into the period, before Snyder drained a trey at 1:55 to give F&M a 54-52 lead. Ursinus answered with a 6-0 run to close out the period and secure the victory.
Barbush paced the Diplomats with a team-high 15 points while collecting seven rebounds and five steals. Bauer netted 12 and Pauley brought down a game-high 14 rebounds.
The Bears were led by Teuber with a game-high 21 points and 13 boards. Diamond Lewis contributed 12 points and Alli Roasti tallied 11.
F&M returns to the court on Thursday when they host No. 9 Muhlenberg. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m.
