Castleton Runs Past Green Mountain, 90-33

POULTNEY, Vt. – Castleton State College placed nine players in the scoring column, including five with double-figures, en route to a 90-33 North Atlantic Conference women's basketball win over Green Mountain College Tuesday evening at the Eagle Dome.

 

Vanessa Powers (Marshfield, Vt.) and Meghan O'Sullivan (Merrick, N.Y.) paced the Spartan offense with 14 points apiece. Tarryn Bolognani (Whitingham, Vt.), Alyssa Leonard (Amherst, Mass.) and Heather Murdough (Hillsborough, N.H.) each followed with 11. Stephanie Bull (Milton, Vt.) grabbed a game-high nine rebounds, while Powers and Bolognani each had eight. Bolognani rounded out her stat sheet with six assists, joining senior Christine Jaques (Burlington, Vt.) for a game high.

 

Chelsea Paul (Northville, N.Y.) led the Eagles with 11 points while Millicent Hopper (Governeur, N.Y.) added 10 points and eight boards.

 

Castleton controlled play throughout, and trailed for just the first minute of play before using a 13-0 run to open up an 11-point lead by the 15 minute mark. After an Eagle bucket, Castleton outscored its hosts 15-7 over the next 10 minutes to take a 28-11 lead on an O'Sullivan lay-up. The Spartans extended their lead to 43-14 by halftime, and continued to maintain the sizeable margin throughout.

 

The Spartans up-tempo defense forced 25 Eagle turnovers, which turned into 30 points. Castleton also held a sizeable advantage inside, outscoring the Eagles 46-20 in the paint and added 46 points off the bench. Offensively the Castleton moved the ball well, dishing out 26 assists on 35 field goals, while turning the ball over just 10 times.

 

Castleton improves to 12-4 overall and 9-1 in conference play with the win, while the Eagles fall to 2-12, 0-10.

 

Next up for the Spartans is a home conference weekend featuring Thomas College Friday evening at 5:30, followed by a 1 pm date with the University of Maine at Farmington on Saturday.
