The Lakeland College women's basketball team won its second straight game on Tuesday night, defeating visiting Alverno College, 66-55.

The Muskies (11-6, 6-5 NAC) got off to a fast start in the first half and were able to coast to victory.

Lakeland started the game on a 17-2 run, something they haven't done in recent weeks. While Alverno was able to knock down some shots, the Muskies were able to stretch the lead to 19 points, 34-15, at halftime. Lakeland scored 14 points in the paint, led by senior Allison Davis (Sheboygan, Wis.) who tallied 10 first half points. Lakeland also held a commanding 21-12 edge on the boards.

The Muskies shot 45.2 percent (14-for-31) from the floor including a 30.8 percent (4-for-13) mark from the 3-point line. The defense limited the Inferno to 28.6 percent (6-for-21) shooting while connecting on 3-of-8 3-point attempts.

Alverno made some good adjustments and went on an 8-0 run to cut the Lakeland lead to 10 early in the second half. The two teams would trade baskets for much of the second half with Lakeland leading by as many as 17. The Inferno made it an eight-point game, 56-48, with 3:05 left, however, the Muskies held their ground and were able to finish the game with six consecutive free throws. Alverno dominated inside, outscoring Lakeland 22-6 in the paint in the second half. The Muskies made up ground with an 11-0 edge in second chance points.

Sophomore Jessica Genke (Kiel, Wis.) led the Muskies with seven points and seven rebounds in the second half, while both junior Becky Mayo (Gladstone, Mich.) and Davis chipped in with six rebounds.

Lakeland shot just 34.8 percent (8-for-23) from the field and 2-for-9 from behind the arc, but converted 14-of-23 free throw attempts in the half. Alverno got hot in the second half shooting 47.1 percent (16-for-34) from the field, 3-for-10 from the 3-point line and 5-for-7 from the charity stripe.

The difference in the game was on the boards, as Lakeland out-rebounded Alverno 46-27, including a 15-2 edge on the offensive glass.

Genke recorded her sixth double-double of the season and her second in two games scoring 11 points and grabbing 13 boards. Davis finished with 11 points and nine rebounds, while sophomore Dana Henrichs (Fall Creek, Wis.) also had 11 points.

With the victory, Lakeland moves into third place in the Northern Athletics North Division.

Lakeland returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 28, when the Muskies host the NAC South Division leaders Milwaukee School of Engineering. Tip is set for 2 p.m.
