OSWEGO, N.Y. - The Oswego State women's basketball team struggled find its touch Saturday night shooting 33.3 percent from the field, as the Lakers (9-6, 4-4 SUNYAC) fell to conference rival Cortland (9-7, 4-5 SUNYAC), 63-51, at Max Ziel Gymnasium. Oswego State committed just 11 turnovers in the game, but also went 3-for-22 (13.6 percent) from long range.
The Lakers were led by Kayla Ryan (Sr., Schaghticoke, N.Y.), who scored 16 points, followed by Kari Kipper (Jr., Loudonville, N.Y.) and Jenna Rossi (Sr., Phoenix, N.Y.) with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Rossi and Kassie Kleine (Jr., Cazenovia, N.Y.) paced Oswego State with five rebounds each.
The Red Dragons had three players reach double digits including Molly Byrne with 18, Megan Maycumber with 14, and Brittany Cohen with 11. Maycumber also finished with seven of Cortland's 43 rebounds.
Oswego State opened with an 8-2 lead over five minutes into the game, but the Red Dragons took their first lead following a Brittany Cohen trey with 8:24 on the scoreboard. However, the teams went back-and-forth throughout the remainder of the first half until they went into halftime deadlocked at 26-26.
Cortland opened the second half with a 12-0 run, as Maycumber scored six of her points during the stretch to go ahead 38-26 with 16:51 on the clock. The Lakers responded with a layup by Ryan and an old-fashioned three-point play from Rossi to pull the home team to within seven points, but that would be as close as Oswego State got the rest of the way as the Red Dragons picked up the victory.
Oswego State takes to the road on Tuesday when it travels to Geneseo to face the Blue Knights at 6 p.m. and close out the first half of the SUNYAC schedule.
