Lucas Become Steals Leader as No. 8/9 William Paterson Women’s Basketball Rolls Past NJCU

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Senior all-American guard BriAnna Lucas (Hamilton, N.J./Nottingham) became the Pioneers' career steals leader as No. 8/9 William Paterson (16-1, 6-1 NJAC) rolled to a 70-42 women's basketball victory at New Jersey City (3-12, 0-6 NJAC) Jan. 18.

 

With her two steals against the Gothic Knights, Lucas increased her career total to 280, surpassing the previous William Paterson career top mark of 279 established by Luci Custis (2003-07).  Lucas finished the game with nine points and five assists.

 

Senior all-American forward April Smith (Barnegat, N.J./Southern Regional) collected 21 points and 14 rebounds, while sophomore guard Floriana Borova (Cresskill, N.J./Cresskill) tallied nine points and four assists.  Junior guard Lindsey Callander (Branchburg, N.J./Somerville) chipped in seven tallies and four assists for the Pioneers, who held NJCU to 30.8 (16-52) percent shooting, including a 1-for-9 (.111) effort from three-point range.

 

WP wasted no time, building a double-digit lead in less than five minutes (14-4, 15:39) and opening up an 18-point margin by halftime at 37-19.  It was more of the same for William Paterson in the second half, as the final 28-point lead matched the largest edge of the game for WP.  The Pioneers out-scored the Gothic Knights 40-20 in the paint and 26-7 off turnovers.

 

Maxine Kaminski scored a team-best nine points from off the bench for New Jersey City.  Jade Medley added eight tallies.

 

William Paterson will host Rutgers-Camden Saturday, Jan. 21, at 1:00 p.m.
